Does the proficiency I get cancel out the heavy disadvantage I get?
Proficiency does not, but Pack Tactics will - advantage + disadvantage = normal roll. Pack Tactics won't stack with Reckless Attack, but you will be able to use either to cancel out disadvantage.
Proficiency doesn’t change the fact that you are a small race and the weapon is big and heavy. But as quindraco said, if you use reckless attack or pack tactics you will attack as normal.
You will never be able to have advantage (multiple advantages don’t stack) as long as you wield a heavy weapon.

Quoth the PHB, "Proficiency with a weapon allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with that weapon. If you make an attack roll using a weapon with which you lack proficiency, you do not add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll." That's all it does. It does not change the properties of the weapon, or any of the limitations those properties impose.
It’s not all bad news though... with either Pack Tactics or Reckless Attack triggered, you’ll also never suffer from DISADVANTAGE either. There’s worse fates than a straight attack roll, if greatsword kobold Barbarian is a concept you’re invested in, it’ll play fine at the table, despite not having any particular advantages. Heck, kobolds have Sunlight Sensitivity anyway, so even kobolds that ARENT wielding great swords will usually be in your same boat of attacking with disadvantage, and they won’t have Reckless Attack to save them.
