Best piece of advice I can give is to talk with your DM and any other players about your thoughts on playing a drow and how they feel about it. If the DM says "They are going to be hunted and hounded constantly, and every man's hand will be against them. They will be viewed as monsters to be killed on sight," it might be better to play something else. If the DM says they will be a challenge and face negative reactions, but should still be viable characters in the campaign, then go ahead.
I can picture campaigns where characters who are drow who are trying to leave drow society and fit in among the surface dwellers would be just fine as characters.
Play what you want to play man. The whole “don’t be a Drow” is utter garbage. Pick what you want and make sure your dm is ok with it, if not then see if you can reach a common middle ground. Most of all have fun
In my game my wife is playing a Drow based on a certain character in a giant series of books. It works out just fine with the party. It can make for some fun times because I do treat drow as not being to well liked in most towns and cities. Even to the point where they are considered a criminal just for being a drow. It really depends on your DM and how he wants to handle the race.
