New year, new build idea and, renewed, needed help.
I would like to play a control-heavy build next. The "story" of the character is inspired by Lovecraft and co, it is intended that she had contact with a Great Old One and since then is no longer completely tight. In social encounters she is more disturbing than helpful. In combat, however, my idea is that she either mentally terrorizes her enemies or takes them directly out of the fight (Banishment, Sleep, Hideous Laughter and the like).
First and foremost, I always think of the Goolock. From the gameplay as "pure class" I find neither Wizard nor Sorcerer very tempting, Warlock I already know that I love him (just except for the problem with the few slots). Now finally my question to you: Which class (incl. subclass) would you recommend for such a playstyle, which race would you lean towards?
Multiclassing and all sourcebooks are allowed.
Thanks a lot for your feedback and possible experience reports.
You can build most caster classes to be control focused:
Creepy wildperson who was twisted by when they stumbled upon and released some ancient being. Druid spells: Entangle, Spike Growth, Charm Person, Fog Cloud, Sleet Storm. etc For subclass I would maybe flavor the Stars druid to go with this Great Old one theme or use Spore druid.
Insidious bard who uses whispers to twist people to his bidding. Think Wormtongue: Bard spells: Charm Person, Hideous Laughter, Calm emotions, Hold Person, Enthrall... you can go on and on. Some of the subclasses are good to help in this even more. Subclass: Eloquence or Spirit

Whisper Bard or Aberrant Mind Sorcerer would be excellent choices for a character with a touch of madness that shares its secrets with others.
