So getting ready to start in a home brew campaign, DM has not given us much other than it will be a mix of adventure, combat, and mysteries to solve. We will be bouncing between rural and medium sized towns in a kingdom.
Here is what the group has so far, all level 1
Fighter (human)
War Cleric (Hill Dwarf)
Wizard (High Elf)
Ranger (Human)
Rogue (Stout Halfling)
My friend wants to play and I think he should either be a healer, either a life cleric or maybe a paladin. He really doesn’t want to play a Druid or bard. Give me your thoughts on what you feel is missing.
He should play whatever he wants to play. You have everything that you traditionally "need" covered and you don't need the wide variety that you needed in earlier editions. Encourage him to roll up anything that he wants to and have fun with it.
Appreciate the response. Yes he will do just that, and yes I am encouraging him to roll up what he wants to play. Looks like we may end up with two rangers. I’m just trying to get some input as I like the different thought processes from different types of players here.
Your party looks very well balanced, the only thing I'd suggest is having him play a character where charisma is the main ability (Warlock, Sorcerer, Bard). This way you'll have someone very good at charisma ability checks. Other than that the party is fine. I'd suggest them be a bard but since they don't want to I guess have him go for Warlock. If he wants to go for Sorcerer that's fine but I think Warlock may be a better class (with multi-class options I'm not so sure...).
I would second a charisma class, unless the whole reason he didn't want to play a bard was he didn't want to be the face of the party. If so, a Charisma class is not going to help that out any. This is a better balanced party than most I have ever played with, and size will help mitigate weaknesses (unless you have a harsh DM). Playing something they like will greatly increase the fun.
Even on the Charisma classes, you don't have to play "face" characters though. Sometimes they can be too beautiful for people to be friendly too. Or in the case of a Warlock, you can have all kinds of themes of "beauty" in the eye of the beholder. Sure, they get bonuses, and can get discounts and stuff... but they don't have to play that up. It may be the exact reason they don't want to talk to people. Or make decisions for others. This is where nailing down a solid background really makes a character over just what class they start off playing.
