I believe lots of people know about the powerful interaction between Armor of Agathys spell + Arcane Ward ability from Abjurer subclass. It is two layers of protection that stacks really well and also gives some offense power thanks to the retributive damage from AoA -- who actually scales amazingly good.
- Armor of Agathys generates 5 THP for a 1st level spell slot, scaling in +5 for each one above the 1st. - If you have any remaining THP active, any creature who hits you at melee will take the initial THP during cast in cold damage. - So if you cast AoA using a 3rd level spell slot, you'll have initially 15 THP and it will deliver 15 cold damage for anyone who hits you until you have remaining THP. - Arcane Ward synergizes amazingly well with AoA because it is an additional layer of protection that stacks with THP and absorb damage prior to THP. So a level 5 Arcane Ward would have 13 "HP" on top of the THP. - You can get Armor of Agathys by being a Mark of Warding Dwarf or just multiclassing in Warlock.
There is new feat in Dragonlance called “Adept of the White Robes” that has good ability named "Protective Ward", that gives you the possibility to reduce damage taken by the cost of a spell slot in d6s + your spellcasting modifier. There is a possible interpretation that you are not actually taking this damage, it's your Arcane Ward, so Protective Ward wouldn't work until you get to the layer of your THP, so it's better to check with your DM.
Assuming it would work, now you'll have a third layer of protection to make sure your AoA THP will be up. This sounds really cool.
This is very similar to my Clockwork Soul build using AoA and Bastion of Law to extend the duration, and throw in Flames of Phlegothos (with liberal use of Green Flame Blade as primary attack except when context calls for a situationally more appropriate spell) you get a little extra output per hit taken, as well as 1 Hellish Rebuke per day from being a Tiefling.
It's the only character I've ever played that I've been happy with the 9AC with. I've used this character in several one-shots and they haven't gone unconscious yet.

It's the master of Wards!
In the Tal'Dorei Reborn book, the Runechild sorcerer subclass also has a feature that lets you reduce damage in a similar way to that Dragonlance feat and it lets you swap in Abjuration spells onto your list, so it combos well with AoA too

Wow, amazing combination. Im trying to find a way to combine both Abjurer and Clockwork Soul, but it’s kinda hard.
Yeah I never love multiclassing full casters together, but that would be locked down like fort Knox if you did.
