Hey everyone, I’m going to be starting a second campaign and I had a very strong character idea/backstory in mind for my first campaign (Half-Elf BeastMaster Ranger - pretty run of the mill I know but screw it that’s the character I felt the need to story arc) but for this second campaign while I would have some preferences/thoughts I’m not really too pushed in any one direction and would like everyone’s thoughts on the best class to round out a group of 5.
Not all the details have been nailed down for the other characters just yet but it’s looking like a paladin(subclass unknown), Battlemaster Fighter, Circle of the Moon Druid and Circle of the Stars Druid.
There seems to be a big hole in the shape of either a spell caster or a rogue/bard/ranger character in my mind.
If it fits your setting, an Artificer would do a good job of rounding out the group with INT features and tools. Your group is pretty well balanced already for combat... you've got 3 characters capable of healing, three solid frontline fighters, and two dedicated spellcasters with a ton of utility. Artificer gives you a ton of problem solving features, and if you come across a locked door you'll actually be able to open it.
I agree with others, you can pick any character and the group would be more than fuctional. D&D is also pretty flexible, so the groupl having a hole in it doesn't make theem disfunctional and can add some fun.
If you are looking to fill those holes though I see them as being the following:
Int based skill checks, on the face of it the group lacks a high int character (though I once joined a group chose to be an artificer as the group seemed tobe short of a high intelligence PC only to find both the cleric the warlock had +1 and +2 to int.
A skill monkey / skill booster (the stars druid will be able.do some boosting on "weal" days.)
Possibly someone with proficiency in thieves tools
Some versatility in spells (The druid spell list is excellent for summoning, battlefield control and healing but is somehat lacking in blasting and mobility.
A wizard would provide a someone good at int based skill checks and fill in the gaps in spellcasting An artificer would be good for the int checks and provide proficiency in most tools. Flash of genius is great for boosting skill checks and saving throws, much better than cosmic omen as you can wait until the roll to decide whether to use it. A bard can boost the skills and can has good skill checks overall. They provide some extra versatility in spells though not as much as a wizard. A rogue is a skill monkey, and only need high dex allowing you to raise another skill, the obvious route here is raising intelligence and going arcane trickster.

An Urchin Wizard or Sorcerer would round up this party well with spellcasting and thieves tools proficient i think.
