Race-wise, pick legacy yuan-ti pureblood (includes poison immunity too) or satyr (legacy preferred) for the magic resistance (plus you are fey creature type so some spells like hold person won't work on you; 35 movement is nice too). Vedalken might work too but I don't know it that well. If you're sticking with rogue, assassin and hope you roll higher initiative to go first.

Could a Wizard employ the following sort of Contingency spell: Thunder Step when someone has a drawn weapon within 6 inches of him/her?

Flawless. The best thing about this is that any Rogue could do it; no special feats or off-class features necessary. Bet he'll look at martials in a totally different light from now on! Great work, thanks for letting us know how it went.
