General context is I'm in a Rise of Tiamat campaign, had to dip for a bit due to a mixture of work and College classes. Both have finally calmed down and I can join again, however in my time gone I have developed a hate for my old character, like the act of playing them again upsets me.
But we are a good chunk into the book so I'm unsure if it's a good idea to ask if I could change characters to another old character of mine, or talk to the GM to try and find a way to find love in my current character again.
One to discuss with your DM. Depending what happned to to PC when you ducked out it might be just as easy to join with a new character as to bring back your old one. The number one rule is for everyone to have fun so either of your solutions work if you the DM and the other players enjoy the game but if you can't find a way to love playing with your current character don't continue with them and play but not enjoy it..
I walked out of a Mythweaver campaign - because the new site and I don't really get along. Then, over time, I figured out how to hammer some of it into a shape less displeasing to my eye, mind and soul, and returned. My story was I simply walked into camp one night, explaining that I'd hit my head in a previous dungeon, and had spent all of the intervening time trying to catch up (he's a pretty comic relief bard, so none of that was out of character).
But if you want another character, why not?

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.
