So my DM already approved content from the Humblewood Campaign Setting for our campaign, and I was thinking about how good this spell, Spiny Shield is. So my thought was this could be used for my Abjuration Wizard and paired with Armor of Agathys which I got from the Rune Shaper feat. As an example, lets say my character has 6 out of 10 health on their ward and 15 temporary HP from Armor of Agathys upcast to lvl 3. Lets say an enemy hits me and I cast Spiny Shield rolling a 5 (which is average for 2d4) and the enemy rolls 17 damage. Spiny Shield immediately reduces the damage to 12. In addition, it recovers 2 HP on the ward since it's a lvl 1 abjuration spell. The ward then absorbs 8 damage reducing it to 4, and this remaining damage is applied to temporary HP reducing it to 11. For damage back, it would deal 5 piercing damage and 15 cold damage for 20 total damage. Compare this to Shield, you turn it into a miss and keep your temporary HP at full and recover 2 on the ward increasing it to 8.
It seems this spell works well when paired this way, and I could potentially pair it with Fire Shield as well to deal 3 different sources of damage when hit by melee attacks. So does it seem worth it?
I guess my main question would be, how often is an abjuration wizard going to be facing melee attacks that would be worth setting up that sort of combo?
I've got a multiclass sorcerer (Runechild subclass from the Tal'Dorei book)/fighter that has a similar feature to Arcane Ward which lets me reduce incoming damage and keep armor of agathys going longer, but it's a character built for melee

Based on our history, it's been a bit. Almost all the creatures we encounter are melee attack creatures, from owl bears to orcs and a roper one time. But I suppose that could change. Past encounters don't guarantee future ones.
