Starting at level 5 and was wanting to be able to crowd control kinda. I want to go oath of crown, but was considering multiclassing into ancestral guardians barbarian. I was just wondering if theres any better options and mainly how to get the most out of this build.
You have a fundamental choice to make if you want to do crowd control. Either you go non-magical route and go Ancestral Guardian and use Grapple, Ancestral Protectors, and Sentinel to keep enemies focused on you. Or you go the magical route and multiclass into a caster class like Bard or Sorcerer and use spells like Wrathful Smite, Hold Person, Hypnotic Pattern, Gust of Wind, Thunderwave/Thunderous Smite, Suggestion, Phantasmal Force, Tasha's Mind Whip. If you go Sorcerer you can grab Quicken Spell to cast these as a bonus action.
For the non-magical route, when would you recommend multiclassing into barbarian and how many levels would you do of each.
Generally I would have suggested starting with it, but since you are 5th level MC immediately and go for 4 levels to grab Sentinel if you don't already have it. If you do have Sentinel you can stick to 3 levels then back to Paladin.
Alternatively, you could go Rune Knight Fighter if you want to keep wearing Heavy Armour, as Barbarians can't rage if they are wearing heavy armour.
Just stay a pure paladin. You get aura of protection and eventually spirit guardians. Spirit guardians is incredible battlefield control; couple that with smites and you have the best defense of all……killing your enemies super fast before they get a chance to hurt you https://vlc****/ .
