I'm a beginner D&D player and will be starting my first ever campaign with my TTRPG club soon, and I've been struggling to come up with ideas for my character. I've been super interested with making a Genasi character, specifically an Air Genasi Bard, but I'm not quite sure where to start. Any pointers and general thoughts? Help is super appreciated <3
I think the biggest advice is to apply the KISS principle to your first character and keep it simple. Don't go crazy with backstory, and don't let yourself feel trapped. You've already started, you're an air genasi and you're a bard. What do you envision doing as a bard (they are very flexible)? The choice on how you wish to play your bard will inform how you allocate your stats and choose your spells and subclasses.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
What part of the Air Genasi makes you like them? Are you wanting to tie into the magical heritage of the Djinn? If so, you might dig into the Warlock and forge a pact with a denizen of the City of Brass. You get your own "itty bitty living space" to go with your Phenomenal Cosmic Power! Or do you have a different kind of aesthetic in mind? I do admit the Genasi flavoring in the Elemental Evil Player's Companion is superior though not everyone has that book.
This is honestly really good advice--I'm still brainstorming up ideas for my Genasi, but I imagine them to either be an entertainer or sage Bard. I'm still deciding between the two at the moment (kinda leaning more towards sage, though!)
I'm also thinking of possibly multiclassing them with Warlock as well, as another user suggested the idea in this thread and I found a lot of intrigue with it.
I just really love the flamboyancy and charisma they have, from what I've read about their species lore. It drew me in initially and I felt like makin a character!
And the more I've been thinking about it, yeah! I'd like to tie in the magical heritage of the Djinn into their character, and having them be part of the Warlock class could work really well. Though, I still want to keep them as a Bard so I might multiclass.
Robbie Damon plays an Air Genasi Bard on the Critical Role stream on youtube (Campaign 3) if you are looking for RP ideas.
Mine is a warlock as others have suggested. I went against type and have an Air Genasi character make a pact with a Dao (earth). My imp familiar has been flavoured as dust devil.
I am currently playing an Air Genasi Warlock (Genie- air). I play it like a bard who claims to be a genie (his patron is a genie, and I reskinned his Sprite Familiar to look like a genie). I went Pact of the Chain (2014), and reskinned the spell descriptions to make them look like wind/lightning/thunder. He's currently 10th level, and will likely begin multi-classing as a bard next level (though i've played him like a bard since day 1).
He plays musical instruments, flirts with the ladies, puts on plays (who needs costume changes when you can cast Seeming on the actors AND the audience). His stage name is The Cerulean Bard (a play on his blue skin), he's from Calimshan, and dresses like Aladin.

Playing D&D since 1982
Have played every version of the game since Basic (Red Box Set), except that abomination sometimes called 4e.
