I've just dived into the world of DnD and I'm so excited!!!
SO I've got a general idea of the character I want to play as...a goliath druid! Their name is Zagga, a giant lovable goofball that has been sent away from their tribe for being more connected to nature than fighting. In my group we have the background of a Far Traveler, and I think that'd fit nicely into my character, coming from far off mountains and traveling around connecting to nature before finding my party. This would include a cartographer tool set.
I'd like to be a Warden Druid, does that mean I can use any simple or martial weapon? And how many can I use?
I'm struggling deciding what to aim for at Lvl 3 for druid subclass, I'm leaning towards the Circle of Stars (fits in with far traveller nicely) or Circle of Moon? What would you recommend?
I want to be able to go into battles without worrying whilst also having the ability to support my team and cast spells. One idea I had being a goliath druid was also changing into large animals (I read you can turn into dinosaurs if you encounter them??!) And the other would be Circle of the Star and turning into a big bright stormy goliath (idk I think that'd look sick)
My ideas for cantrips are druidscraft and either produce flame or guidance. What do guys think would be better flame or guidance? My ideas for spells are healing word, entangle, thunderwave and goodberry. Happy for any suggestions
Lastly my ability stats are more heavily on wisdom and strength, with intelligence being my lowest at 8 and my dexterity at 10. Is this still playable ability points for druids?
I'm not sure if I'm missing anything eep, anyways thank you so much for the read! I'd really love to hear your opinions and suggestions :)
If you select the Warden option, then yes, you'll be proficient with any simple or martial weapon. Though I should point out that this is a feature of the updated 2024 version of the Druid class, while the Far Traveler background is from the older 2014 content. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just something you want to make sure you're on the same page with your DM about. There's been a lot of confusion especially among new players about which options they should be using, so check with your DM.
As for subclass choice: Circle of the Moon is all about Wild Shape (the Druid's ability to transform into animals) and using it effectively in combat. If that's what you want to do a lot of, then it's the only subclass that'll be effective, but it's not good for much else. Circle of Stars has a less narrow focus and a wider range of stuff you can do with it, but don't expect to be fighting in animal form much.
For spells: I personally think that every D&D party should have someone who knows Guidance. However, Clerics can also take it, so if you have a Cleric in your group who has it, you might want something else instead. The updated 2024 version of Produce Flame is a very good spell, and its main effect can be used while you're in animal form as long as you cast it before transforming. For your level 1 spells, those all sound like good choices, but there's less pressure to choose now since you can change them all overnight.
For ability scores: Wisdom is definitely the most important thing for Druids as it powers your spellcasting abilities. Strength is important for getting into melee fights while not in Wild Shape (while in Wild Shape you use the animal form's Strength, not your own) but otherwise less important. You may want more Dexterity since it will increase your AC when not in Wild Shape.
I know that we're using the 2024 handbook but maybe my DM likes the 2014 backgrounds more? Cause that's what they sent to me :)
I'm leaning more towards the Circle of Stars, but I think I'll talk to the group and make that decision a bit later. Good to know it has more versatility, I think that's what I'd rather right now.... turning into a big animal is pretty enticing though.
Awesome, I'll check in to see if anyone else has guidance and go from there, if they do I'll go produce flame.
And finally, I'll move around some ability points to bump up dexterity, I think to 12?

Yeah, if you're starting at level 1, there's no need to decide on a subclass right away. You've got some time to figure out what aspects of the Druid class you like better.
