I got myself a nice monster pet thanks to Planar Binding. It's quite tanky, but one strike of bad luck with Dispel Magic could turn it back against me. As a Cleric, what can I do to make attempts at Dispel Magic (which many of our enemies can cast) more likely to fail? (I already have Silvery Barbs)
The other option is to have someone in your party who stays nearby and knows Counterspell. Overall, though, this is exactly the risk you take when trying to use Planar Binding.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
I would talk to your GM about getting a magic item that might help with that.
Wouldn't hurt to also RP building a relationship with the creature.
Not a big fan of the MacGuffin (plus our campaign already has too many of them), but I think the relationship building idea is great :) I hope the DM agrees!
