Hello, as I said in the title, I need help with a build.
First, Context. I am going to be starting a new campaign after I finish up the campaign I am running, this next campaign is planned to be set around the bastion mechanic, and I have got an agreement with both my friend and my DM for my next character.
The plan is, my friend is playing a necromancer, and I am a sort of death knight (Plan to be Warlock/Paladin) who protects him. So, I need some help. How do I make a death knight warlock paladin character? Any advice is welcome.
You mention Bastions, so that's 2024 rules (although they didn't put the Necromancer Subclass into the 2024 rules).
Do you want to use Heavy Armor, Medium Armor or just Light Armor? A Death Knight suggests Heavy Armor, in which case your first level should be Paladin to get Heavy Armor proficiency. If Medium Armor will suffice, you can get that and Shield proficiency when multi-classing into Paladin. You want to make Charisma your highest attribute, and take Pact of the Blade as your level 1 Eldritch Invocation, which lets you use your Charisma for weapon attacks.
The class mix depends a lot on what you want your character to do most of the time? If you want to smack things like a Paladin, you probably want most of the levels into that. So the next question is how many levels of Warlock do you want? Just 2 for Invocations, 3 for a subclass, or more?
Death Knights are classically just evil paladins. What do you want to get out of Warlock?
As for build suggestions, if you want to mainly be a defender then you're looking at sword & board, using a Longsword for Sap, maybe picking up the Protection fighting style (though I personally would stick with Dueling FS, since it's unlikely your necromancer friend will want to be within 5ft of you. The problem now arises with feats, Sentinel and Defensive Duelist are both really good for a defensive character but to pick up 2 feats you're looking at 8 levels in one class - probably Paladin so you can also pick up Aura of Protection, maybe grab one level fo Warlock for Pact of the Blade so your level 12 Paladin feat can be a CHA ASI.
Alternatively, you could go for a more balanced build using a polearm + PAM + Interception or Defense fighting style going 6 levels into Paladin then MCing into Warlock and picking up GWM at level 10.
I plan to use plate armor because I am kind of planning on being more defensive. Also, I plan to take at least 3-5 levels into warlock for the pact of the blade things.

In response to why I want to go into warlock, it is mostly for the hexblade and pact of the blade. Also, thanks for the feat suggestions.
