I am a player in me and my friends 2014 5e D&D champaign. I am playing Gritgrash, a bounty hunter goblin in a fantasy setting who was born into a goblin tribe that had stolen gnome gear, giving him access to his musket and his pistol. He decided to pursue good after being exiled from his tribe for stealing the weapons, through taking up bounties on bad people. He is a primarily ranged build, with the urban bounty hunter background with 3 levels in echo knight and 1 level into rogue. I would like advice on what I should change or do in the future.
As Agilemind said Echo Knights work best for melee characters, also multiclassing can result is very weak characters if you do not know what you are doing so I think it best you first character or two are single class.
Depending on what you want you have a few options:
If you haven't started playing or your DM and the rest of the table are happy with a rebuild, the best fit for your backstory would be straight rogue, not the most powerful subclass but you can not go very wrong with a single class. If you want to be a fighter, or want to have a bit more power I ould go rune knight.
You could become a melee character, your rogue finds his abilty to produce an echo means he is better with a sword than a gun, in this case I would go Rune knight for all future levels, you get decent features at every level and cunning action is mainly of use for ranged characters and skirmishers (make a melee attack and then run away) where you will be best staying in melee.
If you want o stick with your current character as a gun user I would level up in rogue, as I mentioned thief isn't the most powerful subclass and if your character is now about doing good you could g owuith a different subclass, Arcane trickster would give you a few spells, scout would improve your mobility.
Make sure you talk to the DM about your desire to use firearms. You might be sad if they don't give out magic firearms while +1 bows are readily available.

Echo Knight is much better for a melee character than a ranged character, you should also take 5 levels of one class before multiclassing.
What made you choose rogue / echo knight?
