I'm well familiar with the fire spells Sorcerers get, don't worry! Funny you mention it actually, I've developed a non-multiclassed Draconic Sorcerer build designed to fight in melee. I might post it in a thread sometime, I think it's cool and could probably work in a typical game

Before casting a spell, ask yourself, would this spell be more beneficial to you than casting Fireball instead?
I love taking spell casting classes and making them into melee, I have a melee bard with more HP than normal, actually melee classes. I think only a Barb gets more HP
Not using your reaction every round is opportunity missed. A good defense is a strong offense, so using this tactic is great. You might not get hit to use “shield spell” or not readying your action either. Take the damage off is great offense.

Well depends, are you rolling for HP or are you taking the base average for your class. Because if you are rolling, and roll really outstanding you can have insane HP, couple that with high Con (+3) and tough feat. Then with 5.5 epic boon the other tough feat bam walloping HPs. But the standard method Barbs will out HP everyone

Eh, debatable, particularly if we’re just crunching numbers. Hellish Rebuke is approx 11 single target average damage with a 1st level slot. Chromatic Orb is about 13, with potential to jump to additional targets. In terms of a single encounter, you’re wringing more DPR out via Reaction spells, but in terms of an active day you’re better served saving your slots for the full action damage spells.

If you have a choice between not being hit and wasting your reaction, and being hit and spending your reaction on hellish rebuke, you are usually wisest to pick not being hit.

Barb will out HP everybody, but a tanky bard? That is sorta easy to build, yes, with Tough and high con, still better than most other spell casting
