I've been thinking about running a oneshot where all the players are characters from the public domain. It's been fun thinking about potential builds, so I thought I'd post my initial ideas here and let anyone else chime in with any other ideas. Mostly just for fun!
Dorian Gray as an undying warlock (his patron is the portrait)
Ebeneezer Scrooge as an ancestral guardian barbarian (the ancestral guardians are the ghosts of christmas past, present, and future)
I don't recall, but Circle of the Land druids don't usually wildshape anyway IME. They use their Wildshape for an on-demand familiar or for extra spellslots or the new healing bloom ability.
The 1981 "Excalibur" movie, Merlin always wore some sort of metal akullcap. And druids were pretty serious about not wearing metal in the 1980's rules. So merlin was alway a wizard sorcerer to me
I really don’t see Ebenezer Scrooge as a barbarian. Have you considered the Phantom Rogue?
If you are sticking to human characters, one that I think would be awesome is Odysseus from the Odyssey. I imagine he would be a Battle Master fighter.
The wizard Prospero from Shakespeare’s the Tempest would also be a fun call.
Don Quixote as a delusional Paladin of Devotion.
Clearly, Van Helsing from the dracula mythos would be a Hunter ranger.
The nameless time traveler from HG Wells Time Machine would make an interesting Clockwork Sorcerer or a Chronomagic Wizard with a steam punk dip in artificer.
The very real Rasputin would make a very interesting life cleric.
Nostradamus for a divine wizard.
There are many more. I really like the idea of Robin Hood’s Little John being a Goliath monk/martial artist.
These are all male.
Female characters might include Joan of Arc (obvious reasons), or any of the love interests in the stories I already mentioned.
There are of course some very famous female pirates.
"Public Domain" I believe limits this to characters created before 1950 in literature (I believe).
Honestly if its just for a campaign though it doesn't really matter. But if you were going to publish it you might want to stick to pre-1900 characters just to be safe.

Hello all,
I've been thinking about running a oneshot where all the players are characters from the public domain.
Sherlock Holmes as an inquisitive rogue
Frankenstein as a reanimator artificer
What else?
Count of Monte Cristo as a Whispers Bard.
Beowulf as some kind of Fighter.
Hunchback of Notre Dame as a Grappling-focused Barbarian
Robin Hood as a Gloomstalker Ranger.
King Arthur as a Devotion Paladin
Merlin as a Circle of Land Druid
Zorro as a swashbuckler, naturally.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Ughhh. All the easy ones are gone already.
Robinson Crusoe as a Human Circle of the Sea Druid.
Heyo! You can call me Link. Here’s a bit about me:
Roomba Knight, Architect of the Cataclysm, Foxy Lunar Archpriest. Dubbed The Fluffy Bowman by Golden. He/Him
Theatre Kid, Ravenclaw, bookworm, DM, Lego fanatic, mythology nerd, pedantic about spelling. I also love foxes, cats, otters, and red pandas!
I love K-pop Demon Hunters and Korean Mythology. If you want to ask me about something, send me a PM!
I try to keep the peace and be neutral most of the time…
I'm playing Ethan Hunt in a Keys from the Golden Vault Solo Campaign right now.
Daryl Dixon always a favourite.
Did Merlin ever wildshape?

Merlin uses shapeshifting magic in The Sword in the Stone, at least.

Belephron rode pegasus, so he has to be a paladin.
Perseus had winged boots. Fighter of some kind. But specific magic item in his inventory

Mulan - Open Hand Monk or Battle Master Fighter
Katniss Everdeen - Champion Fighter
Ada Lovelace - Artificer
Harriet Tubman - Thief Rogue
Davy Jones: fathomless warlock
James bond: spy gunslinger
Doctor Strange: diviner wizard
Having fun? I would hope so. Lets see how much fun you're having after the lich starts dipping into it's 1/day spell slots.
Yes I'm aware my username is completely awful, just do your best to ignore it.
This sounds bizarre, but Dracula as a Drahmpid Swashbuckler Rogue/Fiend Warlock/Shadow Sorcerer.

Probably Dex-based as well.

Deadeye fight doesn't exist in actual normal D&D
