Are you planning to be mostly rogue or mostly fighter? (Going anything close to even is not gonna serve you well. Both have central abilities that scale on class level.)
Loaded question. Rogue/Fighter is one of the most common and potent multiclasses, and there are a number of ways to build such a character. Baseline, start Rogue to get more skills, and reach at least level 3 in the class you want as your secondary to unlock a subclass. Whether you want to go higher than level 3 with your secondary class depends on what you're aiming for.
It really depends on what you're optimizing for, and also what level you're targeting. There are actually a surprisingly wide number of viable mixes at higher levels.
crimanal background, for alert and +2 dex, +1 con, and great profieciences.

Hello there! I have too many ideas. I am very impatient am sorry that I am rude sometimes. I love splatoon and obssess over any minmax.I'm sorry if anything I post is unkind or offends you.I'm well aware that I am very weird and I like it that way! call me adam or atomic. check out the never ending arena for good combat! No alts, there can only be one. My mottos:
goal number 1: be funny in all ways possible
goal number 2: be nice in all ways possible
goal number 3: have as much fun in life as you can!
Level 1: Rogue - you want the Dex save proficiency and Sneak Attack to start off with. Background Feat: Tough Ability Scores: maximize your DEX and CON, third should be WIS because you're not going to get Indomitable. Level 2: Fighter - pick up Two Weapon Fighting for your Fighting Style. Take Shortsword (Vex) - to proc Sneak Attack - and Scimitar (Nick) - to free up your Bonus Action - and Shortbow (Vex) - for a ranged-option - as your Weapon Proficiencies. Level 3: Fighter - for Action Surge Level 4: Fighter - BattleMaster for some superiority dice to supplement your now lagging Sneak Attack. Level 5: Fighter - Dual Fighting Feat to get you 3 attacks per turn. Level 6: Fighter - get Extra Attack for a 4th attack per turn. Level 7: Rogue - finally pick up Cunning Level 8: Rogue - Swashbuckler will help proc Sneak Attack more, or take Assassin for a little more DPR. Level 9: Rogue - Pick up Defensive Duelist so your defence makes up for your lagging hit points. Level 10: Rogue - Uncanny Dodge gives you a bit more survivability now that enemies can probably hit through your Defensive Duelist reaction. Level 11: Rogue Level 12: Rogue - Evasion! You'll really want this now as most combat will probably have AoE blasts by this level. Level 13: Rogue - Pick up Resilient (Wis) as crippling mental attacks are probably common by now, you'll need more protection. Level 14-19:Rogue Level 20: Fighter - Allows you to get two Epic Boons.
One of my favorite combos on Rogue /Fighter is combining Reliable Talent with Tactical Mind. Really makes the skill monkey role stronger when you can just add a d10 when needed a couple times per rest. Oh amd you get action surge as a bonus.

How would you optimise a rogue/fighter multiclass in 5.5e?
Level 1 start Rogue as that gets you more skills.
Highest ability = Dex
Next Highest ability = Con (you will be getting hit)
Have Strength at a good ability number. but does not need to be the 3rd best.
Background is based on what you want decent abilities in,
Weapons should be Dex based (Bows/finesse/light/etc.) Concentrate on these types.
2nd level get Fighter. You lose out on Heavy armor proficiency, but then I don't see a Ftr/Rogue needing or even wanting heavy armor.

What is it that you want out of the other class?
