So, there’s a special shopkeeper in our game that doesn’t deal in gold, but rater things like scrying samples or memories. Playing along, I asked for something ridiculous (the Sword of Kas) and was given the seemingly reasonable offer of a sample of another player’s magic.
Is there a better and definitely safer weapon or something else I should be requesting? I already have advanced medium armor and a +1 shield as well as a special belt that lets me recall my handaxes without using an action of any kind.
On the other hand, does it sound like it’s not worth the risk? There’s no telling how these things could come back to bite us. We’ve already made one deal I’m not crazy about (information for information), and I’m worried about how this deal could come back to bite us.
For one, It's not unlikely that this is a scam of somekind, considering that the item you requested is an artifact. However, If you DM really want's to give you one, go for it, I don't see how there won't be repercussions but an Artifact is usually worth it. I still think there's no way the shopkeeper could get something like this, but I suppose you could ask for the Might Servant of Leuk-o, as it makes instantly godlike.
Speaking as a DM, you should totally go for it. There is no way it will go in the slightest bit wrong.
More seriously, go for it. Your DM is not trying to screw you. There may* be consequences you do not foresee, but you've just asked the DM for a plot hook, and they said yes. This plot hook may or may not end with you having the sword of Kas, but that's not why you're here. You're here to have adventures, and this is definitely going to be one of them.
(If your DM is trying to screw you, then there's nothing you can do to avoid it.)
Yikes! I thought the Sword of Kas had drawbacks, but the Might Servant of Leuk-o sounds way too dangerous. Powerful yes, but dangerous. At least the Sword of Kas I might have a slight workaround (if I slice my palm I’m hoping that will quench its’ blood. Or maybe if I carry containers of blood with me.)
Regardless, I see your point about an adventure hook and my responsibility to bite on it as a player. I just want to make sure it’s still fun for me and everyone else. Maybe I’ll make a post in the discord linking the stats and make sure everyone else is cool with it. Obviously it requires one person to at least be good with giving a sample of their magic, so we’ll see.
Thank you all for the quick response! Anyone else is welcome to leave one alao.
As a DM, absolutely go for it. But also accept that it probably won't work out the way you think. Combat will never be trivialized because what would be the point of running it any more? So you can try to make your character as powerful as you want but that just means the enemies will get more powerful in response (or you will attract more powerful enemies). You are welcome to try to come up with "work arounds" but they aren't going to work without DM buy in.
The Sword of Kas in particular is a plot-hook item. You don't just use the Sword of Kas to fight random bandits. It is a weapon with one purpose and one purpose only, your character will never convince it otherwise - it is inherent to the item's creation. So go for it, and enjoy the new campaign arc of hunting down the followers of Vecna and eventually fighting Vecna himself.

That’s honestly something my character wanted ever since two of Vecna’s worshipers sacrificed several of our founding townsfolk before, hence what the sword appealed to me in the first place. Also, don’t misunderstand; I’m not trying to cheat or anything, I’m just looking at it like a problem to solve. Perhaps I am looking at it the wrong way, I’m not sure. Still, I appreciate your input!
