I am a fairly new player, playing Hoard of the Dragon Queen.
Would like a few suggestions about the Journey from Elturull to Waterdeep. Specifically the part where you need to find out information from the Cultists? Getting information is not my strong point! Any ideas appreciated.
I play with just a DM and NPC’s. I am the only PC. So would like some fresh ideas, rather than asking my DM.
Well, the adventure explicitly offers that the characters should try to join the cult caravan or a merchant traveling with the caravan as a body guard in attempt to get close to the cultists and get information out of them. From that point the adventure should offer plenty of opportunities to interact with cultists on the road and suss out information. Basically, join up and start talking to people. Ask where they are headed in a friendly way, and make up some story about yourself so you don't sound like you are just pumping them for information. When stuff happens on the road, be sure to interact with folks and get on their good side so that they are more willing to share information with you.

Sorry I am new to this, probably should have made myself clearer.
I am already joined up with the Caravan, last game we passed through Troll Claws, but I am rubbish at thinking of what to actually ask. Your hint of making up a story is good, thanks.
If you are having a hard time coming up with actual dialogue, you can describe what you are trying to do and use skill rolls to determine success. Start with making friends, ask about where the caravan is going and why it's going there, mention that details are intriguing you and that you'd be interested in learning more so that you could join, something like that progression should allow some trust and lower DCs of rolls.
I don't know what class you are playing, but if you are a sneaky class you can always sneak around camp and listen in on conversations and try to pick up information that way. A spell caster that knows the invisibility spell can also accomplish the same thing. Otherwise what the others have said about talking to them and befriending them is a good way to get information. As for not knowing what to ask about for information wise, think of what information you think you'd need to out smart them. Some information that you can get without talking to them are numbers, type of equipment they are carrying, and just by observing them ranking. These are just a few examples and by no means all that you need. Create a list of things that you think you might need and try to get them answered.
Hope this helps.

Remember this is a game and it's suppose to be fun for everybody. Let's all have fun and kill monsters.

That’s really helpful. Thanks very much.
