So I am currently near the start of a new campaign, and already it has become a mess due to a lot of silly antics my party has done. (ok maybe I contributed to most of it). I am pretty new to playing D&D, so I don't want to completely destroy the campaign due to me going silly mode all the time, so I want to make a calculated decision for my next session that will hopefully not result in everyone and their character dying.
So this is the situation, party has been told to get information from the cult of the dragon, me and two other members tried to go in posing as members by using cloaks from other members we killed. I am a human college of swords bard so I pass my persuasion pretty easily, but one of the guards rolled a nat 20 and recognized one of my party members, which we had forgotten has had a 1v1 duel with their general earlier, so he was kinda a celebrity. They call out for help, we massacre them next turn. We then decided to quickly hide the bodies in nearby bushes and pretend to be the guards ourselves, with the famous guy hiding in a bush as well. Two cultists came and asked what was going on and where the regular guards were, I tried a story about being new initiates who got told to take over for a bit while they went to take a shit. Unfortunately I rolled a nat 1 so the cultist immediately pointed his weapon at us and sent the other cultist to get help. We then quickly murder that guy as well while he was alone and hid his body as well, this time we ALL jumped into bushes and tried to hide pretending to be dead cultist bodies as well. 20+ cultists and drakes came in response, with the leader telling them to search for us. Unfortunately, my other party member, who was a halfling monk, had rolled a nat 20 earlier on the last cultist and done a Mortal Kombat style fatality where he smashed his head into the ground and brains went everywhere. This was right next to his bush so of course every cultist came to investigate the brain splatter, he tried to "perform" as an animal in the bush with his flute, the result was being grabbed by a half-ogre, beaten unconscious by the leader, who was questioning him about where we where, with our monk only trying to flirt with him. The celebrity member then got up and was hoping to save our monk, finally saw that there were 20 of them there, and proceeded to taunt then and run away, hoping to lure them away. We also had a centaur who was waiting away from the camp come in and help with the ensuing escape. They managed to escape and are safe from the cultist camp, but our monk has been captured.
Now the problem is, I am still in that bush. My character has a mask on that he has not taken off so far, so I told the DM I would take it off and hide my weapons so they wouldn't take them off me, then roll to the corner of the rocky wall that the bush was next to and spam cast minor illusion to ninja wall myself into part of the rocky wall, and that in case I was found I would still play dead (my character had a very bloody shirt and many holes in it due to an earlier barrage of 7 cross bolts that had knocked him to 0HP earlier, so he looks pretty dead). I succeeded my stealth rolls, so now I am currently hiding in a bush, right next to the camp wall, next to a dead cultist, ninja hiding as part of the rocky wall by spam casting minor illusion every minute.
So my options are,
A) Wait for a chance and escape to reunite with the rest of my party
B) Wait for my party to come back to the camp and then join them in their plan
C) Solo try and sneak in and pretend to be a cultist
D) Solo try and introduce myself as a wandering bard who is looking for work so he can eat
I have good news. I have DMed this adventure. With out going into too much detail, the book kind of expects you to get found out. You are out numbered, so fighting your way out is not an option.
Try to ninja your way around the edge of camp and find your captured friend. If you get spotted alone, surrender immediately.
I voted B, but my main suggestion is to do what is enjoyable for your table, while trying to align with what your character would do. If you are getting into the RP side of it, and the rest of your players are entertained by you playing solo in a tense situation, try the option you said about being a wandering bard. If your table is antsy to get back to playing, and are getting restless at having to sit there while the party is split, then choosing to wait is the option that will allow the DM to quickly get everyone back together and all playing.
I know it's a "meta" answer, but every time I've been in one of those situations I try to balance the "game" aspect with the "what would my character do" aspect.
Well, I guess I should say what ended up happening. Basically I said I would stay in the bush and try and gather as much info as I could, by paying attention to people going in and out, guard shift, conversations etc. I rolled a 2 on my perception and my DM put me to sleep cause my character was tired and it was night time. So I basically got a free long rest, next day my party came, our other bard infiltrated the cultists. He helped free our monk and his captured master, then went outside to lead a searching party to "find us". Then me and the rest of my party attacked and killed the entrance guards. So now we just got to figure out how get our bard away from a group of 20 cultists in the middle of some flat grasslands.
