Hello so one of my players has expressed he wants to go out on a hunt and test himself on a fight and I want to send him a challenge but not sure what to throw at him, I've told him that it could lead to death but he insists its what his character would do, so anyone have any ideas?
Well a CR 6 Monster is supposed to be fought by 4 people so it would probably be too challenging for a 1-on-1....
Hunting a Displacer Beast or an Owlbear might be a good, but tough challenge. Regardless of the type, Dragon Wyrmlings should be a fair fight. A Spectator (a type of Beholder) if their trying to hunt evil more than a thing of Nature. Those should be some good options for you to choose from.
Something around CR3 (not higher) aught to be a good challenge. And I agree, something from favored enemy and in favored terrain.
If you want him to find a group of lower CR, you could do 1 CR1 and 1 CR2, 2 CR1 and 1 CR1/2, or 4 CR1/2. Fights are harder when out numbered so the CR values are less for the same difficulty.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions, I have decided it to be the displacer beast. Gives it a little harder fight and he will have to use his mind and wits.
I'd like to know how that goes when you get to it. Please set it in the ranger's favored terrain and don't forget about the surprised condition for an ambush.

I’d pick one of their favored enemies for the role playing aspect. Probably an opponent with 6 HD, and most of those are CR 1 or CR 2 monsters.
