My party has captured 2 doppelgängers, we know what they have been up to, but game ended at an impasse.
Currently they are at knifepoint, revealed in their true form.
is it best to just kill them outright though the fight has stopped, because they are so dangerous? Is there a way to let them go but stop them shape shifting? Any ideas welcome. Thanks
It all depends on how your DM is running them. They are neutral per their normal stats, and have above average int and wis. They get hired as assassins quite a bit, and typically make a living as that or as mercenaries. If I were in your shoes I would try to question them and get a better idea of why they were doing whatever it was they were doing and then decide from there. Again, though, it's all about how your DM is using them. Even though they are neutral in their listing, they could be any alignment in your game.
They were masquerading as 2 girls, who joined the caravan we are traveling in, and who offered “services” to make the journey more bearable for the other travelers.
Thanks to a very good perception role we found out they attacked one of the guards to steal her identity and take over her money and when she returned home, a whole farm she would inherit.
We are on our own undercover mission, so as they can read minds, concerned if they have compromised our mission and if we let them go, they will just impersonate someone else instead
Is hiring them out of the question? Also, is your group just a bunch of neutral murder hoboes who are going to slaughter defenseless enemies? The paladin/cleric/[insert Lawful Good party member here] is not going to like that.

have you tried asking who hired them, and for how much, and then offering them more money, to double cross them? half in advance, half upon proof?

Thanks so much for both your answers.
