So my dm just gave me a ring. Once per long rest I can "add/remove/change" 2 letters of a spells name to make it do something different. I need help with ideas!!!! I have
Fire Ball -> Dire Bull or Fire Ballet. Firebolt -> Tire belt. Detect Magic -> Detect Logic. Magic Missile -> Magma Missile or Manic Missive. Ray of Sickness -> Spray of Sickness or Ray of Sockless. Leomund's Tiny Hut -> Leomund's Tin Hat or Leomund's Time Hut. Tenser's Floating Disc -> Tenser's Floating Wish. Rope Trick -> Crepe Trick. Blade Ward -> Flame Ward or Blade Warden or Bladed Warg or Blame War or Plane Ward.
Of course you could simply add an S on the end to make every singular spell plural. Suddenly you get more than 1. e.g. Fire Ball -> Fire Balls.

That could go in so many directions.
Besides the obvious euphemisms - that's sortof the point. The more open-ended you can make a spell by editing its name - the more leeway you have for the effects.
Dire Colt, a large equine creature appears for travel purposes and counts as a war mount.
Dire Cold, creates an area of extreme cold.
Fine Bolt, creates a bolt of fine silk or similar exotic material.
Fire Bomb, creates a napalm like effect in an area.
Ire Dolt, you become aware of the most annoying behavior you can use against a target.
Fire Bond, you have a minor boon from the plane of fire, immune to all effect of heat and flame.
Dancing Lights.
Lancing Flights, you summon the creatures from the 80's video game Joust to fight for you.
Poison Spray
Poison Tray, an illusion creates a sumptuous meal that hides it's true nature, such as rancid, plagued or poisoned.
Shocking Grasp
Choking Grasp, a skeletal hand suffocates it's target.
Smoking Grasp, you ignite flammables and burn targets.
Mage Hand
Mage Land, everyone seems to be wearing a Wizard's hat.
Sage Sand, this spell creates golden sand that purportedly imbues Sage like wisdom when inhaled and rubbed in the eyes. It actually causes minor choking and sight penalties until the charlatan who sold it can get away.
Stage Hand, summons a simple labor construct.
Mage Hint, allows the discovery of new spells by removing, changing or adding letters...Hey, wait a minute...
Age Band, allows a character to modify the age he appears to be.
Rage Hard, causes you to roll a natural 1 on an attack roll that is life or death for your party.
Blade Ward
Blare Wand, creates a wand that can make a deafening sound.
Blame Card, allows you to make ranged attack on a target you aren't already fighting, the target will target and attack the most likely candidate aside from you.
Blast Ward, provides immunity against AoE attack that allow half damage saving throws.
Bride Ward, two possible uses, protects a bride from certain urges to "experience life " before the wedding night. Protects an engaged man from marriage, while still being able to have a GF and play D&D with his friends.
Witch Bolt
Witch Boil, causes pustulent growths on a target.
Itch Molt, causes itchy, dry skin that flakes off.
Chromatic Orb
Aromatic Orb, creates an orb that releases a smell, some pleasant, some not.
Chromatic Ore, another take on Fool's Gold.
Tasha's Hideous Laughter
Tasha's Hideous Daughter, summons a monstrous being created by a poorly thought out coupling of greater beings.
Arcane Lock
Arcane Loss, causes a target to use a spell slot for no good reason.
Spider Climb
Spider Limbs, sprout extra limbs to gain attacks, perform multiple actions and invoke Fear.
Rope Trick
Scope Trick, grants 1 minute of Spell Sniper or Sharp Shooting.
Darkness
Sharkness, doubles swimming speed, track by smell in the water.
Magic Missile
Magic Missive, allows you to easily copy a difficult spell to your spellbook.
Magic Mission, convinces a target to take on a wild goose chase or to run minor errands.
Manic Missile, this missile darts madly to and fro and may send several targets running for covers, when it finally hits a target it SEEMS to cause a lot of pain. Subract 1 hp if struck.
Tenser's Floating Disc
Tenser's Floating Dirk, summons a flying dagger that you can command to attack once on your turn as a free action.
Identity
Plentify, you can double the quantity of a relatively mundane substance you have on hand.
Detect Magic
Detect Mania, you perform a psychological evaluation.
Deter Magic, you create an area that halves magical effects that enter that area.
Direct Magic, you can hijack an existing spell effect that isn't being actively controlled.
Ray of Sickness
Rain of Sickness, creates an area of rot, plague or pestilence.
Ray of Slickness, shoots a ray that may take the effects of a slick substance, such as mud, ice and oil to name a few.
Disguise Self
Disguise Seal, hide magic seal or ward from most means and obscure it's purpose when discovered.
Leomund's Tiny Hut
Leomund's Tinny Hum, causes an infuriatingl ringing in the ears, disadvantage on ability checks etc.
Fire Ball
Mire Ball, humiliate a target with a swampy, phlegmy glop that halves movement, and may knock a target prone.
Gaseous Form
Gaseous Worms, summons giant worms from a hellish dimension.
Gaseous Storm, causes an unnatural storm that is a foggy, eerie green mist that swallows up sound, limits vision and confounds sense of direction.
Gaseous Lore, must be cast while making merry with friends, eating, drinking etc. Allows you to recall every flatulence joke ever told for up to 2 hours.
Actually this a wonderful idea but rotate it 90 degrees. instead of giving an NPC wizard boring counter spell, consider this effect as a counter... Player casts dancing Lights, enemy turns it into dancing knights... on my what a whacky combat.
All of a sudden, the PC’s, all with the Knight background, start dancing! They are easily slaughtered by the multiple goblins, too caught in the groove to fight.
First of all, I absolutely love the idea of this ring. Sure it has the potential to break things, but it also has the potential to be absurdly fun at the table. You can potentially mitigate the game-breaking aspect by saying you can only modify a spell in a certain way one time if that becomes an issue. Let's consider some cantrips:
For people that posted spell ideas, I would be really interested in reading more spell details , effects or game mechanics suggestions. Who knows, maybe some well thought out entries would be fun to read AND to use!
