I'm currently creating a tiefling Fiend-pact tomelock, and was wondering which demonic patron would be most suited for him, given his backstory.
Basically, my guy was an insatiable scholar who sold his soul to a demon in exchange for extensive knowledge regarding the Nine Hell's darkest secrets. Unfortunately, his soon-to-be patron was in a particularly sadistic mood at the time - being a demon and all - and, rather than give a lecture on the subject, decided to forcibly upload the entirety of Hell's secrets into my guy's brain, breaking his mind in the process and driving him mad. Think Spalko's death in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
My question is this:
Which Fiend patron would be most likely to pull a scam like the one mentioned above? The handbooks only contain so much information about each, and I was hoping to get some input from a veteran player.
quote: Second, Asmodeus decreed that any deal Baalzebul strikes shall end in disaster for the other party. Such as going mad.

A Maze of Information
Every edict, policy statement, scientific treatise, and other document in the Nine Hells is recorded, copied, and filed away in Maladomini’s archives. These storehouses are buried deep underground, so that they would remain intact if the layer is ever again hit by the sort of devastation that occurred when Baalzebul was brought to heel.
Each document in the archives is important in its own way, and all these sites are heavily guarded by devils and traps. Even if would-be thieves could get around the defenses, they would have figure out how to navigate the complex classification system that marks the precise location of each bit of paperwork stored within. So Baalzebul would have the information you're looking for, and the deal is, by command of Asmodeus, guaranteed to end in disaster for your character.
Mephistopheles might be a good choice too. He might show a serious lack of respect for someone who thirsted for knowledge without the proper research

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Again, if you’re chill with older editions, try Abbrax.
Edit: I know Abbrax was a demon lord, but he’d have good reason for knowing things about the Nine Hells, with his “arcane knowledge trafficking” and all.
Just a point of clarification... demons =/= devils. If you're going for the Nine Hells, you want devils, not demons. Infernal for the language, not Abyssal.
Like what Maestrino said.. The game differs devils from demons.
Long story short, Devils are Lawful Evil whereas Demons are chaotic evil. Some fiends can be both (like Succubi, who may work as mercenaries or consorts for either).
Quick backstory is that devils are similar to the biblical ones, speak infernal and live in the nine hells. Asmodeus is the ruling devil. Sure they tempt mortals and all that but are generally lawful in their approach (even if a pact goes sour, it wouldn't break one of the fine prints that a devil included)
Demons on the otherhand, live in the chaos of the Abyss and speak abyssal. They are the embodiment of terror and all that fun stuff. SOME top honchos are demogorgan and Grazz't. They want nothing more than to sow chaos and are actually primarily at war with the Devils.
I remember reading once that the ORIGINAL ultimate war wasn't about good/evil but actual about order/chaos.. as a matter of fact, the celestials sent most of the devils down to the nine hells to fight the demons and have actually been corrupted but still maintain their lawful alignment.
Zariel (along with Asmodeus, are my 2 favorites.. and she's actually the main devil in the upcoming book descent into avernus) is actually one of the devil's most recent addition as she is actually a fallen angel who know became Asmodeus's top general in the war with the Demons.
I may be mixing up editions or whatnot but thats just the general information that I found myself while looking up fiend patrons for my warlock. You can find a lot more online
