hey, one of my friends is gonna dm a campaign and I wanna play a fun class. I normally play bards but I want to try something different this time around. I’m looking for a fun class that has some options so probably not a fighter I was thinking about cleric or paladin. I’m not looking for combat ability I’m just looking for fun role play and ability’s to play with so give me your opinions on the most fun classes are.
We are running an evil mini campaign - one of the players has a Hobgoblin fighter/sorcerer. The bit that makes the character fun is the backstory - he is an insurance salesman. He might also be a bit of an arsonist.
If you are looking for fun, just work out an interesting/silly/fun backstory and pick a class/race that fits the world you are in/the backstory
To answer what you would find fun to play is impossible for us to answer. We cannot know what your personal preferences and dispositions are. What I find fun to play you may hate to play.
If you're asking what classes I find fun to play: Monks, Sorcerers, Wizards, Clerics, Rangers, Druids - basically anything with magic that is not a Paladin.
From an RP perspective, though, class is irrelevant - you can make any class fun to RP as because a Class is a set of abilities not a personality.

If you're really looking to dive deep into roleplaying, I like the most versatile, least stereotyped class, where I can pound some monsters and focus on thematics and not mechanics!
It really depends on you. I agree with everyone else, every class is fun to play if you find something in the class that you like. If you don’t find something that you like in a class, then that class won’t be fun.
Since you love playing bards, have you looked at an Arcane Trickster Rogue with the Entertainer background? That combination has a few different types of fun role playing options.
Warlocks can also be built for great role playing if you want to. They have so many different options that you can build a warlock for anything. Just pick your abilities based on having fun instead of on being great at combat and you’ll have a great time playing one.
I like the Warlock so far as well... the backstory with your Patron has a lot of potential for fun RP moments, and it can be really fun to play around with the eldritch invocations and experiement with all the fun and weird combinations you can pull off with them.
But instead of haveing an inteligent weapon, his 'hexblade' is a goofy fey that lost her memory and that transforms into weapons ( if you know the Stormlight books from Brandon Sanderson, you will have an idea what i talk about).
Honestly I was thinking about warlock but I feel like in combat all I’d do is eldritch blast
It does go that way a lot... Warlock is more interesting out of combat, since with things like Eldritch Invocations you can get a lot of At-will uses of lower level spells. But to be fair, if you were playing a Fighter or Barbarian you'd most likely just be making Melee Weapon attacks each round... it helps to almost think of it like being an archer, in a sense. Yes, you're using the same attack most rounds, but you've got some interesting ways to augment it. Plus if you're playing the kind of game that has multiple short battles (where you can take a short rest between them) instead of just one or two long combats, you'll likely end up with more magic than the other caster classes.

Agreed completely. Look at the fun you can have with a low level warlock casting Disguise Self at will. Or any of the other Eldritch Invocations that aren’t combat oriented.
Warlock, pact of the tome with book of ancient secrets. Yes you have a couple of spell slots, but now you can grab rituals from anywhere and you have a tonne of cantrips (including EB). You are also a walking, talking power of Charismatic quality which makes role play interesting. I tend to use my spells for RP (mainly enhanced questioning/torture) and cantrips during fights. Shocking Grasp delivered by a spider familiar called Frazzle, EB with agonising blast invocation works quite well, I do have some battlefield control. Most of my group are up close and personal types (big muscles, low brain lol) so we balance quite well.
I really enjoy bards myself. If I wanted to go somewhere else I'd probably role play a rogue next. I think role playing a magic using character would also be very fun. With the right DM and a good imagination you can have fun with anything.
Fun I think really depends on your backstory and how you play your character!
Needless to say, there are some classes that allow for a lot of goofy or options.
Warlocks are a favorite of mine. They're so creepy! But also really charismatic! If you want to the be the party's face, but also act really weird then they are for you! I'm playing a Plague Doctor Warlock that's obsessed with leeches and has a goofy voice. They also do things like invade people's minds and cast curses on them! It's a lot of fun!
Monks can be really cool! Sometimes they can feel a little underpowered, but there's nothing like running across the battlefield to enemy caster and just beating the hell out of them!
Paladin's can be really cool too. Want to be a tank, heal, and deal some damage? Well the Paladin is for you! The subclass options for them are pretty juicy too!
Barbarians are a bit simpler, but they can have some great potential too! I play a Hafling Barbarian who's angry all the time, but also very small. Our Fighter once threw her at a cluster of enemies in combat like a grenade and it worked really well!
Every class is fun tbh. It just depends on your play style and what you want to do! I usually lean towards casters, but I've been experimenting with other classes and I've liked them a lot!
Of all the classes in 5E, I've so far played a druid (Circle of the Moon), fighter (Battle Master), wizard (School of Necromancy), and monk (Way of the Four Elements).
Mechanics-wise, the druid and fighter were the most fun for me. As a druid, I loved using wildshape in unique ways both in and out of combat; as a fighter, having the casters pile all their buffs on me and then just demolishing the enemy is very very very very satisfying.
Roleplay-wise, the fighter and the wizard were the most fun, but that's for reasons completely unrelated to their classes. The common thread for both of them, though, is that they had clear arcs that led them to very different places than where they started. My fighter started as a spoiled, selfish rake who eventually became an altruistic, self-sacrificing hero. My wizard started as a well-intentioned scholar who eventually became a literal monster as she let her darkest and most selfish impulses take over.

Monks are loaded with a lot of abilities for both combat and not.
Wizards have the most spell variation and versatility.
Rogues tend to fall into the edgy or chaotic stupid thief stereotypes, but have a lot more role play potential besides that.
Druids are a lot of fun and quite versatile.
You know what? Probably ever class can be a lot of fun. With the fighter and sorcerer maybe being the mechanically least diverse.

Strangely...Fighter.

Wizard (Gandalf) of the Tolkien Club
This depends entirely on what one finds fun. Me, I like Battlemaster Fighters and Arcane Trickster Rogues most.
Let me rank the classes in order from most to least fun.
"Not all those who wander are lost"
What's your idea of a "fun" class? A combat machine? A trickster? A good talker? A really good blaster?
Find a class that does what you consider fun and does it well, then play that.
DICE FALL, EVERYONE ROCKS!

My son has great fun with his hexblade warlock.
But instead of haveing an inteligent weapon, his 'hexblade' is a goofy fey that lost her memory and that transforms into weapons ( if you know the Stormlight books from Brandon Sanderson, you will have an idea what i talk about).
I just want some cool abilities that can make some excitement at the table
