I read about cutting slits on an arm during battle for both Intimidation and keeping Rage going. (On an aside, I also read about cutting slits on an arm as penance for some error or sin but not for Rage mechanics.)

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
But if you are attacking yourself, are you not hostile towards yourself?
Hostility is absolutely necessary to understand for some game mechanics, such as opportunity attacks, but is never defined anywhere in the game rules. You have to ask your DM to define hostility for you.

I would love to watch a barbarian beat himself down just to keep his rage going.
