Hello DND Beyond. I am once again asking for your assistance. If you look through my previous history you will see that I played a Warlock last night in a 1shot which was a lvl 20 campaign where we got 3 of any items and it was unlikely we were getting any rests, I thought about using this as a template for our proposed 1-20 campaign that that same DM is currently planning out (It will be split into 2 campaigns basically a 1-10 and a 10-20 with a break in the middle but a idea of how to continue if we chose to do so). THe issue is that the ideas I was given while quite good don't translate into a longer campaign as I cant chose my items, I cant do odd multis that only come online in the last levels and of course, i will be able to rest.
This DM does expect at least semi optimization when it comes to building characters, you don't have to be stat for stat the best classes as such but you will not make it if you don't make at least some smart choices (boosting the right stats...don't dumb your CHA ect ect.
SOOOO - This is what I know I want to do and I really want to try to plan it out as best I can. I like to plan out every little thing, I know lots of people don't agree with this style and while I respect your difference of opinion I know i'm not alone with how I play planning everything out ahead of time and its those kind of people i'm looking for for help.
What I want the charter to be - Eldritch blast spam blasterlock -I do not mind if people think that straight warlock is best for this or a mix, I get the feeling I will be told that Sorlock (17/3) is likely my best option and i'm in no way opposed to doing this but I do wan't to know peoples ideas. More so what is the best Sorc Subclass to mix. I believe as a blasterlock i'd be all in all best with Fiend as the Patron but i'm not really 100% on this, i'm new to the warlock game as such, i find it VERY hard to Multi with spellcasters as getting your spells 3 levels later is HUGE IMO but again i'm looking for experts here.
I like to play Variant human. Not because its broken but because I have basically always played humans for my characters, i'm human and I ID best with human characters.
If you're planning to focus on eldritch blast, getting higher level spells later isn't that big of a deal, at least as far as combat goes. A lot of a sorlock's spell slots get burned for quicken spell anyway.
Honestly though, the most important optimization for a long campaign is optimizing your enjoyment. Think about what things you actually enjoy and make sure you're prepared to do those things.
Consider the Hexblade patron. Medium armor and shield proficiencies are nothing to sneeze at, and your expanded spell list has a couple of great defensive options on it. Additionally, if you get pinned down in melee, you could cut your way out with a Charisma-based sword. None of that impacts your ability to blastlock - in fact, Hexblade's Curse works better with EB than it does with weapon attacks (based purely on number of attacks made)! It just gives you more options and a better AC, which I'd definitely take over the temp hp benefit of the Fiend, as good as it is.
I am going for enjoyment over PURE power but I lost a LOT of enjoyment in a character I feel is under performing in a big way, that said if i was going for pure power id probably be playing some kind of Wizard or a Bard but tbh the book nerd and horny musician don't really do it for me (this is obviously a joke, but they don't interest me) and back when I played WoW I used to play an arcange mage so the idea of spamming one attack for some strange reason appeals to me
It also just clicked that I was thinking about it wrong in terms of patron, I wasn't going to even contemplate Hexblade and was focusing on the fiend but then it just sorta clicked then that if I did go Sorlock I would only get the lvl 3 abilities which the fiends isn't that good compared to what you get for Hexblade. I was looking at the Undead one too which had some cool flavor stuff so I may lean towards that.
Spamming Eldritch Blast lets you do a lot of damage to a single target at a time, especially if you combine it with Hex and Agonizing Blast.
Other than that I’d suggest that you optimize your warlock to fill gaps that the rest of the party can’t fill. No wizard? Pact of the Tome for rituals. No rogue? Pact of the Chain for scouting. No one who’s really strong at healing? Celestial Pact for healing. Etc..
Warlocks are very versatile. I’ve played 4 or 5 of them and they were all different and they were all good at different things depending on what I felt like playing at the time. But every one of mine relied on Eldritch Blast for his damage. I played a Variant Human Goolock who took the Magic Initiate feat for Shield, Dancing Lights, and Prestigitation and called himself a “War Mage”. I played a Half Elf Celestial Pact who took Pact of the Chain and called himself a minstrel who was charming and social. I built a Lurker of the Deep warlock as an NPC in a game that I’m the DM for who is a pirate captain and, because I’m the DM, he’s Pact of the Chain but his familiar is his ship. My PCs have faced him once and they’re about to face him again as the “You’re retiring now” final encounter.
For that extra level of warlock you get your warlock spells going up to level 2 which means you get back 4 sorc points per short rest by converting over only 2. The chain pact is also quite fun as an Imp familiar RP wise is cool and makes some fun little combos.

Partway through the quest for absolute truth.
Interesting

Any tips on how to make the ultimate sorlock?

How did your build do in the one-shot?
A fool pulls the leaves. A brute chops the trunk. A sage digs the roots.
My Improved Lineage System
3rd level of warlock is not worth it. 2 Warlock, 18 Sorcerer is better. You want the last sorcerer sub ability at level 18 and the extra spell points.
Build in the 1-shot was divine 17/hexblade 3
see i dont know if i agree with this.
For that extra level of warlock you get your warlock spells going up to level 2 which means you get back 4 sorc points per short rest by converting over only 2. The chain pact is also quite fun as an Imp familiar RP wise is cool and makes some fun little combos.
