I saw the ads on youtube and decided to create an account a character and look up some videos on D&D. I still don't fully grasp the game so any useful advice would be much appreciated
Edit: I've found a handbook online for five e because someone said i should find one
DnD is a cooperative game where the players and the Dungeon Master work to tell a story. You can't play DnD on your own, so either find yourself some friends who will play, or go to the looking for game forum. You will need to get the players handbook, and read it.....not much I can help you with if you haven't done that.

Watch a few videos. Find a couple folks to help you learn the rules. It is a pretty complex game, but it is a whole lotta fun. It took me some time to understand how the ability score modifiers worked. I came to 5e from AD&D, so things had changed. Eventually you will want to read the spell descriptions over a few times, whether you play a "caster"class or not. Make sure you understand light armor, medium armor and heavy armor, simple weapons, martial weapons, and action economy. Read over the feats and backgrounds and of course read over all the character descriptions, and read over your own character class description several times.

If text is too 'dry' for you, then maybe look into a couple of game streams on YouTube. I suggest you try a few different ones, as each group has their own 'flavor' of playing, and there are lots of ways people play the game and have fun.
Also, as a head's up, D&D Beyond is owned and operated by a different company than the company that makes D&D, Wizards of the Coast. So if you buy something like a hard copy of the Player's Handbook from Wizards, you'll need to buy it again from D&D Beyond to use it here. You can, however, just buy parts at a time on D&D Beyond, if, for example, you find a class you are going to play, you can just purchase it instead of the whole book, if you don;t want to make the full commitment.

Hold off on buying anything for now.
Here is a quick New Player Guide, and there are Basic Rules for free to get started.
