im making a character that is all about speed, and although a pegasus is the fastest mount, that would not be allowed in my campaign so I think a ground-based mount is best
I believe that the Moorbounder (from the Wildemount sourcebook) is the fastest large terrestrial beast suitable for being a mount, at walk speed 70. It's CR 1, so outside the realm of a ranger animal companion, but well within the bounds of the other creatures presented in Find Greater Steed, or probably just available to purchase a trained one as a mount.
A tabaxi druid/monk wildshaped as a Moorbounder with the Mobile feat is even faster :)
Honestly, a Riding Horse or Warhorse are speed 60, which is insanely fast compared to unmounted characters. No reason to go too over the top, a regular old horse can be bought at any village as any class, and will make you feel speedy.
Yeah, Riding Horse and Warhorse are definitely the "classics".
I did a quick skim through all of the low CR Beasts and monstrosities, and 60ft is about as good as it gets for land speed. Griffons tend to be come available in many games, which have an 80ft fly speed, but that's about it for "Standard".
Keep in mind that you can also find items like the Horseshoes of Speed, which increase your mount's movement by 30ft.
i picture you trying to speed across the land, leaving your tortle companion in the dust....to find him waiting for you at the other side, petting his familiar.
now i imagine that too, im going at the speed of sound, and when I get to the other side of the dungeon, the whole party is just waiting there saying "what took you so long".
now you can say that a horse is fine yes its nice and cheap easy for the dm to bring in ect. but the moorbounder has one big thing going for him
"Standing Leap. The moorbounder’s long jump is up to 40 feet and its high jump is up to 20 feet, with or without a running start."
now as i read it "up to 40 feet and up to 20 feet high" means that they can jump unaided anywherewithin 40 feet of them and 20 feet high () regardless of weather they could with ought the ability. as otherwise it would be
Without a running start... assuming a 6ft tall person with 18 str like the moorbounder
...your long jump is 9 feet horizontally.
...your high jump is 3.5 feet off the ground.
With a running start...
(10 feet of movement)
...your long jump is 18 feet horizontally.
...your high jump is 7 feet off the ground
making them the next best thing to a flying mount especially if spells like Jump and a custom version of horseshoes of speed are weighed in and whatever othe spell madness you can think of as long as you remember each foot you clear on the jump costs a foot of movement.
i need a really fast mount, do you know of any?
What are your class, duration, and campaign requirements?
Do you want a mundane mount, a combat mount, a land or flying mount?
Does it need to be easily obtainable, or can it be non-standard?

If you can recruit a barbarian totem warrior into your party who embodies the Elk at 6th level, that will double your travel pace.
