So, One D&D is coming, DNDBeyond is partnered with WOTC that is known. What isn't known.. Will there be an Edition Toggle? Can I still use DNDBeyond for 5e Character sheets after One D&D Comes out? Or will it be impossible? I'd hate to be forced to use another website's character sheet, so I'm hopin' they'll have an option for which Edition people want to use, like ROll20.
1D&D is not an edition change so much as an update, like 3.0 to 3.5; it's the same core system and they've expressly said it will be compatible with 5e adventures and suchlike.
Yes, but I still agree I’d rather have there be a toggle rather than all my books suddenly be listed as ‘Legacy’ simply because I reject their new rules system.
In that case I feel it’s only one more reason to blanketly refuse to update. Out of curiosity is there a poll anywhere with a large sample size that asks how many people plan to update?
That's your prerogative. It's not like you won't be able to access or use the materials; it's just gonna mean a few more steps to get to them if you don't bookmark the table of contents and they won't remain up for sale, judging by the current implementation of Legacy.
More than likely it will be like the source toggles already here.
If you pick the ONEd&d option you will automatically be locked out of any other source book like the 5E PHB and DMG. OneD&D will not be compatible with the PHB at least. Too many changes to each class to start. There might be too many changes for the DMG also. The other suppliment guides might not work either for that matter.
But all the adventure books will be fine. So you will be saving money that way.
If I were the one making the design decisions, I'd add a simple "5E/1DD" toggle in the character creator on the same page as the toggles for Homebrew, Critical Role etc. content. Though they'd only get the choice if they had access to both PHBs either through purchases or content sharing. I would probably also have a toggle attached to a campaign group, allowing the DM to decide if characters will be made using the 2014 or 2024 rules. Theoretically there could be an option to use either, but that's going to be an edge case that I don't think WotC needs to offer officials support for. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if their upcoming VTT only supports the 2024 revision.
Honestly, how the D&D Beyond character builder & campaign groups will support the 2024 revisions is one of my biggest questions. I know they stopped implementing UA character options because of the workload involved in coding things that might never become official, but given the scope of the 2024 books, they're gonna need a lot of lead time.

Unfortunately, "Legacy" tag is almost certainly what's going to happen, given that they've already got the infrastructure for it set up on the site.
