I have a player wanting to make an Alchemist Artificer for the campaign, but the class description seems to be lacking on any ammo limitations. As far as I'm concerned the vials are ammo, and I'm not about to say that the player can have an infinite amount of every vial at all times. What are your suggestions for quantity limitations on the Alchemist?
No need to, they are cantrips in every sense of the word. They are also magically produced out of the sachel. However, if you are set on doing so, I'd suggest: 1) make vials cheap... VERY cheap. They will be the player's primary source of damage. 2) warn the player before he creates the character because it may change their mind about it.
Agreed with Tfyre01. I personally would not impose a limitation on vials and would encourage them to come up with other potions that they could craft on the fly as well. If I WERE going to apply a limitation, I might look at the arcane magazine in the gunslinger category and apply something along the same lines: At the end of each long rest, you can magically produce 40 rounds of ammunition with this magazine. After each short rest, you can produce 10 rounds. I might even be willing to go so far as to require them to pick and choose how much of each potion they will need in advance (the decisions will get harder as they level up.)
