The heck? Why are we arguing over rope strengths and weights?
Canvas slings as 'hanging beddes' existed long before Southern Europe encountered the Polynesians that were using nets for that purpose. They just didn't call them Hammocks until that point. Basically it's a bedroll tied between two trees. Is this really something that needs to be called out as a special piece of equipment?
i dunno, kamchatmonk might be onto something. how much does a Leomund's Tiny Hut weigh? and how can we know whether a hammock will hold one until we define the shape and volume of that hammock?
EDIT: Put my money where my mouth is. Neither the 2e or 3e PHB have hammocks. However, both have fishing nets. in 2e a fishing net was 10 sq ft, 5 pounds, and cost 4gp. In 3e it was 25 sq ft, 5 pounds, and 4gp. I'd say buy a fishing net, and fold it over a few times to make your hammock. Then, you can use it for fishing when you need to do the survival meta game.
The 3e Arms and Equipment Guide has a hammock. 5 gp, 1 lb.
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

Only in a brand new edition. If added in 5e, hammocks can and will break class balance. Hammock combos will be the new meta, I'm telling you.
