I kind of love the Mystic as a concept, given the sheer versatility it's six subclasses with 24-ish spells per offers, but I know in my heart of hearts that it's simply broken at it's core if it wanted to work alongside other classes. So I'll propose a set of Homebrew Changes for people who, despite themselves, have not only made the conscious decision to use this class, but also rolled 20 on a persuasion check to get the DM on board with it in informed consent.
I won't be discussing solo campaigns as anything can work in a vacuum and, honestly, this class was almost built to let dms plan for an entire party with only one class, which is the first thing I'm going to suggest preventing.
1) Every subclass except Wu Jen gets their Discipline options limited to only their Subclasses' Order, and only One at Level 2 with the addition of a Second at level 7 and a Third at level 15. You can still change one at the end of a long rest. 2) Wu Jen gets access to any from a different tree at Level 15, and in exchange, their Wizard spells go from costing up to 7 for a 5th tier spell to double a spell's level in the cost to create spell slots. -) Specified now is that, while they can create 4th & 5th tier spell slots, they cannot use it to cast 4th or 5th tier spells, only upcasted ones. This confused me at first, hence why I specify this. -) They now need material components for the spells they are casting as well, which was also previously absent. 3) Their Level One class abilities (Psychic Focus, Psionic Ability, and Mystic Order ), all move up to Level 2, which is in line with other classes which only get their own subclasses at later levels. 4) Strength of Mind is straight up gutted. They can already gain proficiency in scores other than Wisdom via focusing on certain disciplines, so this extra layer is unnecessary fluff -) Their Level Two class ability Mystical Recovery moves to Level 3. Telepathy moves down to Level 1, with 60 feet of range instead of 120 feet, the former base range which now represents a Level 4 boost, and is specified to only be able to affect allies, which was previously absent. 5) the Level 11+ Psionic Mastery class ability adds one level of curable exhaustion per use, to balance the way it shores up your already-prodigious psi point count. -)Psionic Mastery's ability to allow you to concentrate on multiple discipline "spells" at once is reduced to a max of Two concentrated discipline "spells" on the 15th Level and Three concentrated disciplines on 17th Level as opposed to no cap being in place. -) Wu Jen can benefit from this concentration bonus with his magic spells
Yes, I know I'm bailing out a sinking ship here with a Soup Ladel and a dream, but here we are. I'm still very inexperienced in DND, but just like balancing these things. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
