It seems odd that new rules would be introduced into an essentials kit (I'd have thought "essentials" would contain the essential existing rules from D&D). Does anyone happen to know whether the essentials kit contains any additional rules that make it worth purchasing even for someone with the core rulebooks plus the usual add-on source books (Mordenkainen, Sword Coast, etc)?
The physical essentials kit comes with a simplified rule book, the DoIP adventures, DM screen, dice, spell/item/sidekick cards, and codes for the DDB essential kit and 50% off DDB PHB.
The DDB essentials kit comes with 4 adventures (3 exclusive to DDB) and these adventures include the sidekick rules up to 12th level.
I've heard that the sidekick rules from UA have made it into D&D Essentials.

The DM screen is quite flimsy, but I really think the adventure is worth the purchase.
Personally, I love the sidekick rules. I ran a game for my son, gave him 4 sidekicks and made them all half his level. It worked out perfectly.
