i have a question about the ratfolk ability/trait under the Subrace “underfolk”. The trait is called “Claw” which allows your unarmed strikes to deal 1d4 slashing damage on a hit (no bonuses).
My questions is: would this ability stack with a Monks bonus action attack? At lvl 1, a monks Martial Arts ability allows them to replace “normal unarmed strike” damage with a 1d4 (pg. 195 PHB explains normal unarmed stike damage).
would “Claw” stack? If it read as “extra 1d4 slashing damage” I could definitely see it as stacking. Or does “Claw” simply read the same way as martial arts, in that it replaces the normal unarmed strike damage?
is it all up to the dms discretion? Anyone have any experience with this?
It counts as an unarmed attack, so it is a Monk Weapon. It just means your unarmed attacks can deal slashing (claws) or bludgeoning (punch, kick, headbutt, elbowdrop, etc...)
Update for anyone who may come across this problem:
Ratfolk (and any other races that give a bonus attack action) monk can attack with an attack action, and then an unarmed bonus attack action with their Martial Arts trait.
My PC playing a ratfolk monk wielding a shakuhachi quarterstaff would roll 1d8 + dex mod for their attack action, and with his bonus attack action he can choose to either deal 1d4 + dex mod of bludgeoning or slashing damage.
My PC wants to start experimenting with poisons which he can add to his claws/nails that could have extra effects when he attacks with his unarmed bonus action. Love the creativity these guys can come up with.
Thank you for guiding me in the right direction.

It's the same with Tabaxi and Lizardfolk.
