Currently playing my first D&D campaign as a Changeling Fighter (rogue seemed like a better fit, but our group already had one). I feel like my rolled stats are good enough for a multitude of different builds, and I'd like some advice on what could make a fun character to play. So far our campaign has been role-play heavy a la Critical Role with a few fights per session, so feats and skills that cater to social encounters are just as relevant as combat ones. Here's my character so far:
Race: Changeling Background: Noble Class: Fighter (battlemaster) Fighting Style: Duelist Maneuvers: Precision Attack, Riposte, Trip Attack Level: 5 First ASI: +1 DEX / +1 WIS Stats: (AC 19) STR 11, DEX 20, CON 16, INT 11, WIS 16, CHA 17 Skills: Athletics, History, Insight, Perception, Persuasion Tools: Leatherworkers Kit, Cooking Utensils (double proficiency using Changeling's divergent persona) Backstory: Raised as a personal guard for royal siblings, so his upbringing and skills are geared more towards diplomacy.
Equipment Weapon: +1 Rapier, extra 1d4 Cold Damage, Special Ability: (Once per short rest, you may point this weapon at a hostile creature. Spectral wings unfurl from your back and you lunge forward up to 20 feet (at no movement cost, and hit die becomes a 1d12 for the attack. On a Critical Hit, the hostile creature must roll a dc12 STR save or be knocked prone) Armor: Studded Leather Armor, add-on: (magical leather patch from a Changeling house that allows the armor to change its appearance at-will while shapeshifting) Accessory: Ring (While you wear this ring, difficult terrain doesn't cost you extra movement. In addition, once per day, when Paralyzed, Restrained, Frightened, or Charmed, the use can chose to have the ring focus these effects into itself, dispelling the effect on the user) Shield: Shield
We're coming up on level 6 soon, so for my second ASI I wanted to take a feat that would round out or "define" what kind of fighter the character is. We currently do not have any ranged damage dealers other than a warlock with Eldritch Blyaast! or myself with darts, so pivoting my character to a ranged fighter is not out of the question. Surprise attacks from monster hoards have also been a pain in our sides and caused some major damage in the last few sessions, so taking Alert feat is very high on my list.
A Changeling with advantage in Deception and transformable armor has been incredible for role playing; having gotten the party out of a couple potentially difficult boss fights already. I have the option of taking the Chameleon feat from Eberron's expansion book that came out not too long ago. The feat allows a changeling to shape-shift as a bonus action, adds a second use of Unsettling Visage, and +1 CHA. I'm considering taking this at level 8 to get that extra Charisma bump and the ability to shape-shift during battles (deceiving enemies by turning into their allies).
I love the concept of being someone that can "hide in plain sight" rather than sneaking around in the dark. I plan to eventually dip into rogue for expertise in Persuasion and Deception. Considering that, what are your thoughts or recommendations for my next several levels?
Should I go full sword & board? Alert and Swashbuckler dip for +14 to initiative? Crossbow & Sharpshooter?
