Announced for 2021, and by Paramount. From the article:
"Nothing is really known about the project right now, which has been quiet for quite some time (and has apparently changed studios from Warner Bros. to Paramount since we last heard anything). Last year the word was that David Leslie Johnson, who has some fantasy experience from Wrath of the Titans would write, while Rob Letterman, who had fun with the Goosebumps movie, would direct, and the plan was that they would be looking for a lighter, Guardians of the Galaxy flavor in this one.
The Tracking Board had some other details, saying they were looking for a "Vin Diesel type" and that that the film is about "a warrior and his band of mystical creatures – including a half-dragon and a cunning gnome – as they embark on a dangerous journey to find a mythical treasure." Deadlinereported that the film was readying a character sheet and rolling up vital statistics for a lead roll for Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver). It's not clear if any of this still applies."
So........... think this might have a shot of being good? Or at least so utterly terrible that the badness collapses in on itself and makes it kinda funny? The hint of Guardians of the Galaxy type meta humor worries me a little. You need at least some of that, but I feel that, like with Thor Ragnarok, they might be risking overdoing it.
I understand Joe Manganiello was trying to get his own version created, and it doesn't sound anything like what was in the article. Though the article itself said they weren't entirely sure if any of that applied.
"I am not a half-dragon, I am a dragonborn. Half-dragons are completely different."
"Do I look mystical to you, bigjob? Do I? Does my dagger look mystical to you?"
You crack me up man : )
IF
they can keep it from getting too campy it should be fun. But I always worry it will be another Name of the King... sigh... To be fair having just recently gotten around to seeing GotG2 one of my first thoughts while watching the opening scene my first feeling was "this feels like a DnD group" which was funny DND IN SPACE! jokes with friends for about 10 minutes. Followed by me looking at how the plot rolled out and thinking how it actually has some fun ideas I could introduce into a game.
I wouldn't mind if this was the amount of humor and tongue in cheek references present in a DnD movie. I also feel like they should have one comedy one that comes out in some conjunction with a serious dark and psychologically terrifying movie. Man there are some creepy monsters available to work into a a scary movie with a dnd flavor.

"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
The plot sounds completely uninspired. A Guardians feel isn't a bad thing, as long as it doesn't try to be Guardians. Will be sad if all they do is trade on the D&D brand and the movie is rubbish.

I think that a D&D movie would do well to use Dragonlance, Curse of Strahd, or another property that has distinct story points to adapt a solid script from.

Dare I say even Drizzt could work...
I'd prefer a Dragonlance Netflix series.
