I started using D&D beyond last winter to help run my campaign of the Rime of the Frostmaiden. It is good so far. Players have their characters online and I can track them that way. A few issues though:
1. I do not at present have a paid subscription
2. It seems I can only use the dice roller when I am in campaign mode, looking at someone's character sheet? Can it not be opened at other times?
3. I have most all of my books in hardcopy. If I purchase digital as well can I then use dice roller?
4. If I purchase digital versions of campaigns or sourcebooks and I open a map, do I control what the players see or do I need to use a third party app?
And anyone else who joins me in "the new to DnDB DM confusion club" feel free to jump in with more questions :)
2. I personally like to use the dice roller in the Encounter Builder at the moment for Behind the Screen rolls. Combat Tracker is good for public rolls from the DM side. (But requires a paid subscription at this time since it is in alpha).
3. Physical books are not relevant to using this site. The dice roller is in the Encounter Builder, Combat Tracker, and Character Sheets at present.
4. The VTT functions on DDB are not ready yet but are planned to be slowly coming online over the next year. Hopefully interactive maps will be soon, but soon is a relative term. I personally am using Roll20 at the moment to load battle maps, but as soon as the VTT is useable here I will make that switch.
Thanks! I'm getting paid membership this week. One more question, if I get paid membership and players do not yet I use combat tracker, is it visible to them at all or is it just me? Also I am using Owlbear Rodeo for mapping at present. Works well. Not super full of bells and whistles but good!

thanks again!
Combat tracker rolls will show up in the game log, which all players in the campaign can see. :)
