I have a 7th level drow rogue, criminal background, with a 20 dex.. no feats or enhancing magical items.. On paper I thought he has a +5 for initiative. DND beyond insists it's +8 on the character sheet. I'm feeling pretty obtuse.. Please explain to me as if you were explaing to a child because I am baffled... no amount of research has elucidated this for me. Thanks for helping me with this.

Does it use the 2024 Criminal background? If so, he’ll have the Alert feat, which adds your proficiency bonus to your initiative. At level 7, that’s +3, so that’d account for the discrepancy.

I was about to check if the Criminal Background gave the Alert Feat, Seems that is the answer.
Hey all. Thanks for the responses. You guys have it right. I was unaware the character sheet was based on the 2024 PHB. We are mid campaign and will likely stay with 2014... we are discussing it. Talks of using the new ranger stuff for a PC... but otherwise standing pat. PC's seem powerful enough as it is. Good catch and thanks again.

The character sheet isn't public so I can't see it.
But I'm going to guess you're a Swashbuckler Rogue, which gets to add the CHA mod to initiative too. Is your Charisma 16/17?
This is a signature. It was a simple signature. But it has been upgraded.
Belolonandalogalo, Sunny | Draíocht, Kholias | Eggo Lass, 100 Dungeons

Yo. You need to make it public so we can see it.
