I have been running a few campaigns now completely with the books (LMOP, homebrew and now Dungeon of the Mad mage with the Companion from DMsguild added). I have been investing lately in Beyond and I was really (positively) suprised. All the information for my players in one app (I have a subscription) so they can use the PHB, Xanathar, Tashas and some races and class options.
I have been wondering if I could go completely digital. My prep now consists out of : reading the hardcover book for DOTMM and a seperate binder with the Companion. Then manually adding encounters in Game Master 5th Edition on my iPad. Last but not least adding my own extra flavor to tie the players backgrounds into the dungeon. The pro is that after prepping an entire floor, all encounters and social encounters are in my brain ;)
Would buying adventures (or even the legendary bundle) help with my prepping or do I still have to input every single encounter into Beyond?
As of this time you would still need to build the encounters(I'm not familiar with the program you currently use, but ddb encounter builder supplies all the stats when you pick a monster) you should be able to use the encounter builder with the basic rules monsters to see if it is easier to enter an encounter than your current solution before investing. I think you have limited encounters you can save, but subscribing removes that limit.
I know they have plans to eventually have encounters from published adventures able to be directly opened in the combat tracker, but they are not there yet. I still use physical books when I run games at home but I use DDB exclusively when sessions are online or when I play at a store or someone else's house. Not having to lug the books around alone makes it worth it to me. If you're going to get the legendary bundle I recommend waiting for a sale. My best guess for the next big one will be either around Christmas or Cyber Monday, but they seem to happen at irregular intervals so keep a lookout for the blue bar at the top of the website.
Thank you, that is exactly what I needed to hear! That would be the final push for the Legendary Bundle if they have all the encounters ready to go from an adventure. I tried the free adventure Frozen Sick and saw all the information as links, but if they could import all encounters from an adventure into it as well that would save at least 50% of prep!
