I've created two nations based on Minnesota. For my personal setting, I created a Wood Elf nation called Immeral Larka which is a large enchanted Minnesota like forest with rivers, and plants and animals from MN. It's also heavily modeled after Athel Loren from Warhammer. For more loose settings where I'm usually a player, I created a human nation called Mnisota for some of my human characters to come from. It's heavily based on the Kingdom of the North from Game of Thrones, except no mountains. Like most fantasy nations, both are monarchies, but in both cases, the aristocracy is poor compared to other nations. And the Head of State, while always a member of the Royal Family or A Royal Family, is never the heir by birth order, but by merit. So this reduces decadence and infighting among the nobility and royal family. So both nations are more functional, compared to other nations.
I brought this up in another thread I think yesterday. I don't live there, and it's not exactly a nation (more a "we live in a society" than a "we the people" so to speak) but the seat of power in my homebrew world of Abandominion has the same shape and footprint as the Luxor Casino complex in Vegas. I mean what says D&D in the real world more than a giant black glass pyramid flanked by an imposing black glass oblong? Yes, the loyalists to Tommary the Abdicator maintain camps awaiting their departed leader's possible return and the restoration of their world from the grip of despoilers and exploiters ... in the parking lot. (I actually don't know if the Luxor has a Parking Lot, I presume it's probably more a valet and parking structure sort of thing, and that's sort of the case in the game, but there's enough asphalt to put up some tents around it too to give it that encampment feel).
