I'd recommend reading the character creation section of the PHB. Pretty sure it's the first thing in there. That'll clear up the differences between 5th edition and older editions.
Variant human is a variant rule, and so are feats. Just check with your DM that you're even using them in this adventure because you might not be.

I played D&D for 30 odd years, from the 80s, to the early Oughties, so I am a bit out of date.
As a Human Variant, I should get an extra feat but the list does not include Improved Initiative or Combat Reflexed [They are in the book]
What am I doing wrong?
Also, where is my first level Feat?

Neither of those feats exist in dnd 5e.

Not explicitly, but your DM might feel certain character options (races, classes) are not appropriate for the setting. Check with them.
