I'm in final deliberations over which character for a long term campaign to pick. class wise narrowed it down to a ranger and am aiming for a hunter domain. Race wise its down to a wood elf or human variant with sharpshooter as a starting feat, So here fishing for pros and cons as to each choice, to help me choose.
Depends on what you want to do. Human feat puts them ahead in terms of dealing damage and quick access to feat combinations. Wood elf's darkvision and mask of the wild make them superior in terms of scouting and sneaking, and their Charm resistance gives them an edge when facing foes that use mind control (most mind control spells/abilities use the charmed condition in 5e).
Wood Elves have access to Elven Accuracy feat, which if you're angling for advantage somehow, you get a bit of a boost there. Humans have Prodigy, which grants Expertise in one skill, but that will overlap with Natural Explorer when you get that bonus, so it might end up redundant.
I tend to recommend humans if you're planning on getting a number of feats for your character, such as sharpshooter, crossbow expert, lucky, or alert and focusing on damage. For anything else related to utility, or overall flexibility, wood elf is better in my opinion.
