So I would like to purchase the Monster Manual, and also Out of the Abyss. For Out of the Abyss I really just wanted all the monsters and demons (and demon lords) as I own the physical book.
But I only wish to have the the monsters, more or less.
So what confuses me is the difference between the 3 types of purchase.
MM for instance - full book $30
Monsters only $19.99
Compendium $19.99
But even from the descriptions I can't tell the difference of what Compendium means, and what I lose out of I buy monsters only.
The Compendium is the digital version of the source material and it is presented in order like the physical book is. Usually, books have an introductory chapter that you do not unlock if you buy the Monster Only option.
The Monster Only is the Listing of the monsters stats and info you unlock.
If you purchase just the monsters you can use the Monster Listing to search/view all the unlocked monsters.
I believe the search bar up top would work for searching as well but you would need to make sure you are opening the result for the monster listing and not the compendium page.

So what is the difference between the Compendium and the full purchase then?
The Compendium allows you to read through as a digital book and includes full stat blocks for all of the monsters.
The full purchase additionally includes all of those monsters within the searchable database, so you can access them via the search page and tooltips.
The search page I find really handy for looking for creatures by type and CR for example.

Awesome. Thank you so much for answering my nub questions.
I have one last one. If I read correctly, say for the MM or Abyss, if I purchase monsters only, it is fully searchable.
The full book purchase is equal to Compendium + Listing.
