Alright, so to start with: I know now that this was dumb, but I’m a new player and I’ve already done it. So I chose to do a forge cleric/ battle smith artificer multiclass- end results cleric 17, artificer 3.
I currently have 2 levels in cleric and 1 level in artificer, and we are in the middle of what appears to be a large dungeon. We will likely level up next round and I’d like advice.
should I do my 3rd cleric level to get my lvl 2 spell slots (3 additional spells total) or should I do my second level of artificer to get my infusions and make the level of artificer that I took useful?
essentially it’s 2 infusions vs (1 lvl 1 spell slot and 2 level 2 spell slots)
I figured, thank you. Just for arguments sake, he seems to be very by the books, and so far; I don’t want to say stingy (because he is a good dm) but he doesn’t seem to hand out info or items unless you really put the work in or think of things yourself. It seems to be a bit more punishing than rewarding (difficulty wise- not in a bad way).
we have mostly spell casters- wizard, college of lore bard, a new character because our Wild magic sorcerer died, a rogue, and a barbarian. Of course I’m the cleric/artificer.
my main concern was because I already took 1 level of artificer it seems like a waste with the exp. growth between levels not to just knock my second level out of the way.
It would also be helpful to know what you are going for with the character? Why the 17/3 split? What is the concept you are trying to achieve?
2nd level cleric spells will be helpful with spells like spiritual weapon for bonus action attacks until you have your steel defender going. But if you are not planning on taking that spell and have nothing to be using your bonus action on, then getting to 3rd level artificer to get the defender online might be a stronger priority.
Again, it kind of depends how you want to play your character.

thank you ahead of time.
Without knowing any of the details of your DM's style or campaign, I'd say that the spells from Cleric 3 are probably better.

You don’t get much for level 1 artificer when multiclassing into it
