While no official announcement has been made regarding the Artificer class, the recent posts regarding the 2024 PHB mention:
"12 digital dice bonuses (one for each class)," "The 12 base classes return in the 2024 Player’s Handbook,"
However 2015's PHB had 12 classes at the start, and we received the late addition of Artificer later on, officially published in Eberron and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
D&D 5th edition has 13 classes and I can't imagine one of the other PHB original classes being forgotten. Whether the designers think 13 is an unlucky number or simply forgot to give it any content updates (again), it is looking like Artificers are not seeing the light of the PHB yet again. As one of my favorite classes I am sad to see it be sidelined again. What are everyone elses thoughts? Is there anymore Artificer love out there? Would you like to see Artificers get a 2024 update?
As mentioned there I'd personally much rather have a true arcane gish class, a psion/mentallist, or probably several other new classes versus a revision of the Artificer, though I imagine it will get updated in a future product
I love the artificer class, that said I haven't played the 5e version simply because it is a relatively complicated class and my current groups are very new (mostly) to D&D as a whole and I haven't found the right table to try it out with. I am very happy with it being left out of the 5e PHB's both versions, that is just me you do not have to agree, I just see it as a more advanced class and as such being a little harder to get access to is not necessarily a bad thing unless you want to play it with a minimal buy in. The loss of piecemeal definitely increases the cost to those looking forward to the updated rules that will apply to this class.
Why do all these hysterical threads not realize that the PHB is core and the Artificer has never been core? That doesn't mean it's being "abandoned."
To be fair I don't think Orc has ever been a core race in a PHB (please correct me if I'm wrong; I only did a quick google search) so it wouldn't be unprecedented, given they've already added the non-core Orc to the PHB, to add something that wasn't a core class to the PHB.
They said they'd be updating the Artificer, but not in the PHB.
I don't think it's a good argument that it wasn't core before so it shouldn't be now. It's not like the PHB is sacrosanct or nothing has been added to it before.
It probably won't be ten years before they decide that it'll be more profitable to dump 5e and start afresh than to try to revamp it. In that case, it's possible that the Artificer will join the PHB pantheon of classes. We'll probably be having this conversation about a Psion class.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

Albeit a class is more work than a single race.
The Orc is probably not the best precedent, as it essentially replaces the Half-Orc in the PHB. However, the Aasimar and Goliath are new to the PHB, and the total number of species in the PHB has gone up from nine to ten. Similarly, the total number of subclasses has risen from 40 to 48, and it sounds like the number of spells in the PHB has increased a fair bit. So, yes, they could have put the Artificer in, and I would have been delighted. On the other hand, there are points where they have to stop and think: is this getting too big? Bigger eventually means more expensive and at what point would people decide that the new PHB is just too pricey.
Classes do seem to be the material that is hardest to get right, going by how they dominated the playtest process and how much angst and rage is generated in response to some of the proposed changes. I can fully understand them shying away from adding to that work and stress by letting the Artificer wait until later.
So, I would have selected the “I like the Artificer but I’m ok with waiting for it to appear in a later book” option, if that had been included.
Since the original artificer was introduced in Eberron, I think it's safe to say that the first appearance of the revised class will be in the next Eberron book, although the next "Of Everything" published after that will likely also have it. Although the devs could surprise us and publish that first. The Artificer class is isn't locked into only being part of Eberron, of course, but Eberron itself wouldn't function the same way without it.
Personally, I'd like to see the class updated sooner rather than later - which would also give more chances for additional subclasses to be imagined and hopefully included in later books.
If we think about that, maybe a new class would be sold better than an update of the artificier, but we know not everybody is happy with the psionic mystic.
Other point is where to publish the new subclasses for artificer after this appeared in the first sourcebook.

Also the poll is heavily slanted. I can think Artificer is cool (and do) without thinking it belongs in the PHB.
Mostly this. I don't think that Artificer belongs in the PHB. The poll, while flawed, at the time of my posting shows why. The don't want/don't care crowd is better represented by a full 10% (over 50%). To me, that indicates there's just not enough demand to justify the space in this book, and the effort it would have taken to make sure everything was up-to-standard for the 2024 release. The proper place for the artificer, is in my opinion, in an expansion book where demand is less critical. The PHB has to cater to the absolute widest amount of people. Artificer...just doesn't have a broad appeal, so it belongs in a different book.
Hopefully, when it returns, it will offer options that change the minds of the don't care/don't want people.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Artificer as a class is the least broadly compatible with fantasy tropes as whole. That is not to say there's anything fundamentally wrong with aetherpunk, magitek, or suchlike in fantasy, but it's not really a concept that's compatible with say a Tolkien-esque setting, while all of the classes currently in the PHB are. So, yeah, I think it's appropriate it's at one remove from the core books. It's not like the current iteration is incompatible with the update, and frankly Artificer is the least in need of a tune-up in any case.

This is exactly how I feel. I want to like the artificer. I really do like the base kit. It's all the subclasses that turn me off. They just don't give me much I feel like I can even re-flavor into something that I'd enjoy playing.

The easiest one to reflavor is probably the armorer, although the battlesmith could instead have a golem-type construct instead of a clockwork one. Not exactly Tolkien-esque, but the game itself has moved away from that some time ago.
A weaponsmith (with a focus on standard weapons rather than walking mini-siege engines) would a good additional subclass. The mystic smith is straight out of mythology, and would fit into many campaigns without changing the feel of them.

This mentality is destroying Artificer it can do more then steampunk but cuz it came out in Ebberon dnd hasn't made much effort implying Artificer really is the 'mad science' class which can frankly be themed to be anything. The vid I linked earlier by one of my fave YouTubers explains the stereotypes and what you can do to enjoy Artificer without steampunk

Artificer was not in the original PhB. You'll probably have to wait for an updated supplement rulebook like Eberron or Tasha's.
Personally I think it should be exclusive to Eberron.

I guess it will appear in a sourcebook style Tasha's Cauldron or PH2. But they can't say it yet because then players would stop to buy Tasha's book.
My question is if artificier and psionic mystic will appear in the same sourcebook.

Not like EVERY supplement gave eevery core class a sub anyway so not sure how adding an artificer sub be 'annoying'
The new core books are compatible with Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. Artifice is a relatively new class and doesn't need an update at this time.
The class was introduced 5 years ago it could get a revamp in 5.5
