for a upcoming D&D session I was hoping to try to become a lich. Little back ground, I'm a wizard in a 6 year campaign, I had finally reached level 20 and started to think, " where do I go next. " I eventually decided to try and become a lich. I thought that it would be easy to find the cannon way to become a lich, you know, I googled and googled away, yet all the information was either to vague or conflicting with another source. so I thought to ask on D&D beyond because at this point I got nothing else. Thank you very much and have a wonderful day mate!
The closest thing to "official" rules for becoming a lich is the DMs Guild supplement (published by Wizards of the Coast) Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy. It features a lot of NPC allies that can grant benefits and boons, one of which being a lich who can provide the secrets of lichdom. This includes a step-by-step guide to becoming a unliving spellcaster
(shameless self promotion) here's a link to the bits I cobbled together for trying to achieve lichdom, apologies in advance any spelling/grammatical errors....

No worries, and I whole heartedly recommend Journal of Villainy. Probably one of my favourite DMs Guild purchases

The closest to official is actually the dark gift of Tenebrous in the Amber Temple in Curse of Strahd, though it's very low detail.
