I'm looking for a better way to Creat characters and keep track of them and this looks like a great way to do that BUT if I was to get the master's subscription then would my 5 companions be able to use my sub or would they have to get one too?
A subscription is for one user. In this case, that would be you. The Master subscription has all the same benefits a Hero subscription has plus the ability for you to share additional content you've paid for on D&D Beyond. Content purchases are the real over head to managing a game via DDB. With a master tier subscription you only have access to content published in D&D 5e's System Reference Document, reflected in the Basic Rules here. There's a lot of content in the Player's Handbook not in that document, not to mention Tasha's, Xanathar's etc. So, the benefit to having a Master Subscription is that if you were in a game with your friends who let's say all have free accounts, with your Master's Subscription any book or piecemeal content you buy here on DDB is also available to your fellow players as long as you're in a campaign together. So a Master's Tier doesn't allow other users to "use your sub" but your sub extends access to any other content you own on DDB, provided those players are in a campaign with you.
I'm presuming by companions you mean people you're playing with and not some sort of collective relationship status. Technically "family" accounts are not a thing on DDB either and an account assumes one user.

No problem, if you're considering jumping aboard and debating what content to buy, there's a good "Buyers' Guide" thread pinned to the top of this forum. There's lots of ways to start owning content, whether you buy specific books or piecemeal stuff and build up your collection as you need it.
Also as a master tier holder, the stuff your companions may own on their own accounts can also be shared with you, it's not uncommon for a dedicated game group to have one Master Tier subscription holder and then content ownership distributed over a few players so the whole table shares the expense.
