Curious as to why Matt isn't using DnD Beyond for his look ups. Even in ep 8, he's still grabbing the books? All.well.and good the players are using it, but I think it would carry more weight if he used the site as well.
I think at this point it's probably because Matt knows those books really well and knows where to find what he's looking for.
When DM'ing a game, you don't want to have to pause to check rules unless you really need to, as it messes with the flow of the game, so when you do, you'll want to spend as little time as possible checking.
The players on the other hand have more time to check stuff and look things up, while other players are taking a turn.
That said - I use D&D Beyond on my laptop when I am DM'ing as I find it quicker than the rulebooks - it's just down to what you're used to I guess!
If you know the books well enough, it's easier, sometimes, to open the book to the page you want than to open the corresponding D&D Beyond page and wait for it to load. Also, the physical books are better at a few things.

I'm not so sure he isn't looking things up in D&D Beyond when he is using his phone though. That looks exactly like what he is doing. I agree on the books though... when you know them it is a fast resource... I'm just not there in 5e like I was in past editions.

I agree with all of that. It was more just because the partnership, would look better. Personally, I've gotten faster at DnD Beyond vs my books.
He's also been DMing for many years prior to DnDbeyond.
Old habits die hard I guess.
